I. school bullying
School bullying stipulated in the Anti-Bullying Law is not limited to physical injury, verbal insult, social isolation, cyber bullying, etc., but also belongs to the category of "minimization problem".
Verbal insults generally include abuse, ridicule, intimidation and hate speech. For example, girls form small groups and often ridicule another girl for being too fat and ugly, like a fat pig. This seriously hurts others' self-esteem, and even leads to depression and suicidal tendencies.
Social isolation harms others in indirect ways, such as spreading rumors behind the scenes, ignoring and isolating vulnerable individuals. This kind of bullying is often more subtle and difficult to detect, but the damage is just as serious. Cyberbullying extends verbal and social bullying to cyberspace. The terrible thing about this new type of bullying is that it is everywhere, and the victims can be affected even if they hide in their own rooms.
Rebecca, a 0/2-year-old girl from Kloc, Florida, committed suicide because she couldn't stand cyberbullying. Before that, she had been tortured for a year, and the malicious remarks of Rebecca students such as "You should drink bleach to die", "Nobody likes you" and "You should commit suicide" kept appearing on social network pages. After the incident, two girls who had been bullying Rebecca on the Internet were detained by the local police. Of course, whether in the United States or China, these acts are intolerable and morally condemned. This is a universal value, in which there is no cultural difference. However, due to different laws and systems, in the United States, the same behavior has to pay a more painful (or perhaps deserved) price.
In addition, parents of foreign students should be reminded that you may be confident that your child will not become a bully, but he may become an innocent victim in a strange environment where his parents are not around. At this time, what you need to do is to communicate with schools and host families frequently, always pay attention to children's behaviors and emotions, and find out whether children have any changes such as not wanting to go to school, anxiety and fear, sharp decline in academic performance, irritability and insomnia, bed wetting, crying and headache, etc., and encourage children to face problems bravely and actively, communicate with psychological teachers, and report the situation to the school. You know, under the restriction of the law, no school or teacher dares to ignore such bullying.
Second, the open terrorist threat.
It is also a real case that happened not long ago. Today, on February 1 day, a China student from the University of Iowa posted on Twitter, "If the school still lets me down, let the professors feel the fear of Lu Gang." As a result, he was expelled from school and sent back to China at Chicago airport on February 4.
According to the explanation of the parties, this is just a spit before the exam, just a joke. However, this joke is very inappropriate. First of all, because of 199 1 University of Iowa shooting incident, "Lu Gang" has become an untouchable and sensitive word. At that time, Lu Gang, a foreign student, was dissatisfied with his tutor and staff, resulting in a tragedy of 5 deaths/kloc-0 injuries. Mention of Lu Gang is tantamount to announcing another school shooting.
Secondly, he does have a gun, and he has published photos of it. It's okay to have a gun. Foreign students are allowed to hold guns legally. There is not much problem with holding a gun photo, and many Americans have also sent a gun photo. But the problem lies in the person who legally holds a gun and has issued a photo of the gun. Only if he has made a terrorist threat does it mean that he has the conditions to commit a crime. This classmate publicly threatened the school and the professor personally, endangering public safety, and clearly provided his own crime conditions, motives and even imitators to the police. In the United States, where school shootings are so horrible, there are many traps.
In the United States, remarks that endanger others and even public safety will have serious consequences, and such jokes are not allowed. At this point, Americans and foreign students are treated equally by the police. An American netizen threatened on Twitter that he would assassinate the president if he forwarded 100 times or more. In our opinion, this is really more like a joke, but in the United States, where everyone can hold a gun, the police went to the netizen's house half an hour later and arrested him.
Third, trespassing on houses.
The following is a widely circulated case about breaking into houses. In Louisiana, 1992, a Japanese student and a friend went to a party. They went the wrong way and couldn't find a place, so they went into a private house and asked for directions. The hostess thinks that people who enter their house from the outside in the dark may be a danger. She asked her husband to take a gun when he went out to check.
Perhaps such a reminder also makes her husband more nervous. When he went out, he pointed his gun at the man coming from the darkness and shouted, freeze! However, this foreign student who just came to the United States from Japan not only doesn't understand English warnings, but also comes from a country with a completely different cultural background, where guns are prohibited. He didn't have any normal reaction that Americans would have, and continued to walk towards the owner of the gun. Looking at the person who was still approaching him in the dark, the man shot and killed the other person. The US District Court ruled that the man was not guilty.
In the United States, private houses, including front yard, backyard and driveway, belong to the owner's private property. If others invade without authorization and make the owner feel threatened, then the owner has the right to defend himself. In the above case, if the Japanese students don't continue to approach after the male host stops drinking, it is murder for the male host to shoot. However, cultural and linguistic barriers led to this tragedy.
There is also a very hot event at the China Forum. An old couple came to visit relatives in the United States. According to domestic living habits, they like to take a walk in the block after dinner. There is nothing wrong with walking on public sidewalks, and Americans often walk or walk their dogs on them. But when the old couple saw the beautiful yard of others' house, they naturally went in to visit and point their fingers for several days. As a result, the residents of the community called the police. Although the old couple finally explained things clearly at the police station, they have to say that it was also an accident.
Therefore, young international students should be warned not to enter any place in other people's homes casually, to take some detours instead of turning around in the driveway of other people's homes, and not to visit other people's yards at will, so as not to bring unnecessary trouble to themselves.
4. Refusing to cooperate with the police
Under normal circumstances, law-abiding international students are unlikely to encounter opportunities to contact the police, except for one case: driving. There is no special traffic police in America. It is normal police who catch speeding, running red lights and other violations on the road. In other words, unlike China, American policemen who perform traffic police functions are armed with guns.
Moreover, because they may encounter drivers who are unwilling to cooperate with the police, fugitives with deadly weapons, drug dealers, etc. when the police come forward for questioning, if they do not cooperate, the police have reason to suspect that the other party will attack the police, and then they can kill the other party in self-defense.
Under normal circumstances, the police car will first flash the light to signal the vehicle in front to stop at the side of the road. If the driver doesn't realize that he has been flashed, the police car will whistle a few times as a warning. If it is not stopped, the police's vigilance will be greatly increased. At this point, if you are anxious to get off the bus because of nervousness and panic, I'm afraid the muzzle facing the driver is black.
The correct way is: everyone in the car should sit still. Then, the driver rolled down the window and put his hand on the steering wheel instead of putting his hand into his bag or pocket, so that the police can see that you don't have a gun or other tools in your hand and then wait for further instructions from the police. If you don't listen to the police's instructions and make them feel threatened, then the police can shoot.
In addition, if you drive illegally and want to give the police some money to get them through customs, this is a bribe in the United States and you will also be arrested.
