This is probably the best planetary nebula for people who use small telescopes. Because it is big and bright, and its structure is clear. You can see it with a 3-inch (8 cm) telescope, and you can see it clearly with a 6-inch telescope. However, the entire nebula can only be seen with a telescope of 14 inch (36 cm) or larger. With a larger telescope, a soft blue-green halo can be seen around the dumbbell. Observed with a large telescope, the nuclear stars with azimuth angles of125 and12 along the long axis of the halo are obviously close to the western edge of the dumbbell. But astronomer Weibo noticed that several dark stars were not physically related to the nebula. That 12 nuclear star is difficult to identify.
