Education in Danzhou

In 1044 (the fourth year of Qingli in the Northern Song Dynasty), Zhou Confucianism was founded in the east of Zhoucheng (Zhonghe Town). This Confucian school is one of the earliest schools in Quanqiong. From 1097 to 1100 (from the fourth year of Shaosheng in the Song Dynasty to the third year of Yuanfu), the great writer Su Shi (Dongpo) lived in Danzhou for three years and established education, which had a profound impact on enlightening people's wisdom and promoting the culture of the Central Plains. At that time, there were more than 20 students from inside and outside the island who studied under Su Shi. As a result, Danzhou became the center of Hainan's cultural education with "the sound of books resounding and the sound of strings singing everywhere."

Since then, the reading culture in Danzhou has become increasingly popular. In 1127 (the early year of Jianyan of the Song Dynasty), Wang Xiao founded Lingchun Library. In the Ming Dynasty, 24 more schools including Zhende Academy, Tunan Academy, Yizhai Academy and Social Studies were built; in the Qing Dynasty, Dongpo Academy and Lize Academy were rebuilt, and Zhuanglang Academy, Wenhui Academy, Xingwen Academy, Wei Literature Academy and Social studies and other 9 rooms. There are schools all over the prefectures and towns. There are many scholars who study and study, and he is famous in the state and county. From the Song Dynasty to the end of the Qing Dynasty, 5 people in this county passed the imperial examination and 76 people passed the imperial examination.

In 1912 (the first year of the Republic of China), the imperial examination was completely abolished and schools were established. The education system underwent fundamental changes. In 1925 (the 14th year of the Republic of China), there were 135 primary schools in Dan County with 7,536 students. Danxian County Junior High School (referred to as "Dan Middle School") was established in 1926 (the 15th year of the Republic of China). Two classes were enrolled in September 1928, and three classes were enrolled the following year. In 1934 (the 23rd year of the Republic of China), a simple normal school class was established in "Danzhong". In the 1930s, schools were mostly run in large villages, and the original private school-style primary schools were gradually merged. In 1935 (the 24th year of the Republic of China), there were 77 primary schools.

In 1958, during the so-called "Great Leap Forward", education implemented the "walking on two legs" policy, and education developed too fast. In 1961, the County Education Bureau implemented the central government's eight-character policy of "adjustment, consolidation, enrichment, and improvement" to put school education on a normal development track and improve teaching quality accordingly. However, this county was the hardest hit area by the "Cultural Revolution" in Guangdong Province. During the 10 years of the "Cultural Revolution" from 1966 to 1976, classes were suspended for the first three years to cause revolution, teachers were criticized and the school order was chaotic. In the later period of the "Cultural Revolution", the schooling system was shortened, teaching materials were reduced, labor classes were increased, and the slogan "Middle schools should not go out of the commune, and primary school should not go out of the team" was put forward, forming a situation where all primary schools were running "middle schools with hats", and commune middle schools were running high schools, which led to the development of education. Incompatible with the economic foundation.

After the "Gang of Four" was smashed, chaos was restored, the school layout was readjusted, middle and primary schools were adjusted, high schools were compressed, there were fewer junior high school classes attached to primary schools, and the school's normal teaching order and admission examination system were restored. In 1990, the county had 52 middle schools with a student population of 27,000, more than 29 times that of 1952; and 422 primary schools with a student population of 104,200, 17.6 times that of 1952. At the same time, ethnic education, state-owned farms and education in factories, mines and enterprises have also developed; overseas Chinese, Hong Kong and Taiwan compatriots are patriotic and love their hometown, are enthusiastic about education, donate money to run schools, and have made certain contributions to the development of education in their hometowns.

Since the examination system was restored in 1977, teaching and learning have flourished, education at all levels has flourished, and teaching quality has improved year by year. From 1977 to 1990, the county sent 3,749 new students to colleges and universities and technical secondary schools across the country; various types of education have initially formed an education network with relatively complete equipment, a more coordinated proportion, and a more reasonable layout. In 1990, the enrollment rates for high school, junior high school, and primary school were 26.8%, 40.7%, and 88.7% respectively.
