How to appreciate calligraphy works?

1. Basic knowledge reserve of calligraphy?

1 style. Calligraphy is developing with time. It is generally believed that there are five kinds of calligraphy, namely seal script, official script, regular script, running script and cursive script. This is only a rough classification, and each script has a more detailed classification. For example, seal script can be divided into big seal script and small seal script. The broad sense of Da Zhuan refers to the characters before Xiao Zhuan, including Oracle Bone Inscriptions and inscriptions on bronze in Shang and Zhou Dynasties. Xiao Zhuan refers to the legal characters promulgated after Qin unified China. Another example is regular script, which can be subdivided into Yan Ti, Liu Ti, Ou Ti and Zhao Ti.

2. strokes. Stroke refers to a continuous writing line when Chinese characters are written, and it is the most basic element of Chinese characters. Stroke can be divided into horizontal (1), vertical (2), left (3), dot (3) and si (? ), folding (cutting) and other categories, the specific subdivision can reach more than 30 kinds. Are there any words that contain all the strokes? "Forever", of course. There are eight strokes of the word "Yong": point, horizontal, vertical, hook, horizontal, oblique and press. According to their strokes, the word "Yong" can be summarized into eight methods of "Yong". These eight strokes are the basic strokes of regular script, each with its own characteristics. If the word "forever" can write the spirit of every stroke, regular script can be regarded as reaching a considerable level.

3. knot words. The knot structure of calligraphy, also known as knot structure and frame structure, refers to the arrangement of strokes and shapes, the length, thickness, pitch and development of Chinese strokes, and the width, height and rightness of radicals, which form different forms of a single word. Some people summarize the writing standards as follows: fairness and stability, clear memorization, orderly primary and secondary, stable center of gravity, moderate pruning, uniform stop of density, proper competition, one-sidedness and tape, unevenness, and integration of reality and reality. Word formation is an important content of calligraphers' study of calligraphy in past dynasties. Related expositions include Ouyang Xiu's Thirty-six Methods of Word Formation, His Eighty-four Methods of Big Characters, and His Ninety-two Methods of Shelf Formation. Interested parties can refer to it.

4. Famous posts. After thousands of years of precipitation, China's calligraphy art has produced many calligraphers and calligraphers' posts handed down from generation to generation. Reading and copying these inscriptions carefully is not only a way to understand the ingenious thinking and superb techniques of predecessors, but also a shortcut to improve their calligraphy aesthetics and cultivation. Here, I would like to recommend several famous posts that have been highly respected in the past. Due to space constraints, no pictures are posted here. You can find it yourself if you are interested. ? Inscriptions in regular script: Ou Yangxun's Jiuchenggong Li Quanming, Yan Zhenqing's Yan Monument and Duo Pagoda Monument, Liu Gongquan's Mysterious Pagoda Monument and Shence Army Monument, Zhong Shaojing's Ling Fei Classic (in small letters), etc. Famous running script posts: Preface to Lanting Collection by Wang Xizhi, Preface to Sanzang of Datang (this was not created by Wang Xizhi, but was carved from Wang Xizhi's handwriting by a noble monk Huairen, also known as Preface to Tang Huairen Collection), Huangzhou Cold Food Post by Su Shi, Shusu Post by Mi Fei, etc. Famous cursive post: Wang Xianzhi's Mid-Autumn Post, Huai Su's autobiography post, Evonne's cursive thousand-character writing, etc. After thousands of years' development, there are many famous calligraphers' works, and the above list is only some fine works. ?

Two? Reflections on Appreciating Calligraphy Works

The first level is to look at the strokes. Stroke refers to the most basic elements that make up a word. The characteristics of strokes are different among different characters, such as orthographic strokes in seal script and regular script, while orthographic strokes in cursive script are full of changes. How to understand the lines, shapes and trends of strokes, and even write clever strokes, the key is to read more, think more and practice more. ?

The second level is the shelf structure. The word "knot" refers to the arrangement of strokes and glyphs of words. Different from other characters, Chinese characters are hieroglyphics. Chinese characters have left-right structure, up-down structure, left-middle-right, upper-middle-lower, fully enclosed and semi-enclosed. Different structures of Chinese characters should be combined in different ways, but to achieve a reasonable structure, we must meet the above-mentioned ten standards, namely, fairness and stability, clear echo, orderly primary and secondary, stable center of gravity, moderate pruning, even density, appropriate competition, reflection and care, staggered arrangement and interaction between reality and reality. The third level is to look at the rules. Composition includes layout, changes between words (if the strokes of two adjacent words are the same, such as the word "Linbian", the last stroke of the word "Linbian" should be written as a dot to prevent it from being the same as the last stroke of the word "Bian"), line spacing, blank space, lettering and stamping. If the structure of strokes and shelves is a single word as a whole, then the composition will rise to the level of the whole work. Only in this way can we see clearly how the author arranges the number of lines according to the number of words, how to arrange different forms of words to make the works rich and diverse, how to make the finishing touch with seals, and how to control the blank space by signing.

In short, to appreciate any calligraphy work, you can first look at the strokes of a single word, then look at the shelf structure of a single word, and then look at the layout of the whole work.
