Master Huineng of Six Ancestors

Six ancestors Huineng

Huineng (638~7 13) was a monk in the Tang Dynasty. Six ancestors of Zen in China. Well done. The common surname is Lu He (now Daxing, Beijing). The teenager was exiled to Xinzhou, Lingnan (now emerging in Guangdong) with his father. After his father died, he and his mother moved to the South China Sea. He is bitter and poor, and lives by selling firewood. At the age of 24, he was sponsored to study in the north. In the first year of Tang Longshuo (66 1), he met the five ancestors of Zen in Huangmei. The fifth ancestor asked his followers to work, chop wood and walk for more than eight months. At that time, Hong Ren was very old. He was eager to pass on the clothes and ordered his disciples to present them. At that time, there was a cloud in Shen Xiu: "I am a bodhi tree, and my heart is like a mirror platform. I always wipe hard to keep the dust off. " Hongren thought that he didn't see his nature and didn't pass on his clothes. Huineng recited a poem and wrote it on the wall: "Bodhi has no trees, and the mirror is not a stage. Nothing, then where did it cause dust? " Seeing this, Hong Ren called Huineng to the hall, told him a diamond sutra, and passed it on to him, and he returned to the south.

After Huineng returned to Guangdong, he went to Huozhuoji in Guangzhou on the eighth day of the first month of Yi Feng (676). According to the records of the stupa, when Master Yinzong talked about the Nirvana Sutra in the temple, "sometimes the wind blows, and a monk said," The wind blows; A monk said: move; Huineng said: "It's not the wind, it's not the movement, it's the heart of the benevolent." . When the Indian Sect heard of it, it gave it on the fifteenth day of the first month and gave it a full ring on the eighth day of February, so it had a pagoda relic.

Huineng said, "Wisdom is the foundation", and he also said, "First, establish a religion without thinking". The so-called mindlessness means that although there is awareness, it is often empty. His explanation of "epiphany" is: from the beginning, it was empty and it was epiphany. That is, no place to live is an epiphany; Today, those who are neutral about their own gradual progress, that is, on several floors, should make use of gradual progress, and ultimately they can't stand it. He also said: there is charming, hollow meditation, thinking nothing, calling himself big. This generation, can't say, for Jaken. He also said: "Buddhism is in the world and is inseparable from the world. Looking for bodhi in another life is like looking for rabbit horns. " It not only briefly explained that Zen originated from Prajna, but also laid a theoretical foundation for the development of Zen and had a great influence on the establishment of different schools of Zen masters later.

In the second year of Kaiyuan (7 13), Huineng died in Guoen Temple in Xinzhou. Buddhist teachers from Shao and Guang welcomed Huineng's body to Nanhua Temple in Caoxi, where it has been enshrined to this day.
