Earthly branch refers to the twelve parts into which Jupiter's orbit is divided. Heavenly stems and earthly branches constitutes the traditional calendar year in ancient China. The period of revolution of Jupiter is about twelve years, so Jupiter is used to date the years in ancient China, so it is called "the year-old star". Later, these twelve parts were named "earthly branches".
The Book of Changes Miscellaneous Notes says: "The cooperation between the five elements and heavenly stems contains many things, and then it is different from the cooperation with the earthly branches. There are twelve branches: Zi, Ugly, Yin, Mao, Chen, Si, Wu, Wei, Shen, You, Xu and Hai. Some people write "ground branch" to indicate that the trunk is bifurcated, but it is actually a "branch" and a supporting branch. The role of the earth itself, that is, the role of the moon and the earth in the solar system, and the relationship between solar terms will be introduced in detail later.
With regard to earthly branches, if we only study the academic thoughts and principles of Zhouyi, it is unnecessary to study the five elements and the main branches. To understand the gossip relationship in the Book of Changes used by China for thousands of years in astronomy and geography, we must first understand the five elements. A science professor wrote to ask some questions abroad, because a book was published abroad, which thought that there was a hole in the south pole of the earth, there was another world in the hole, there were people, and flying saucers came from the center of the earth, and so on. , related to the Book of Changes.
I wrote back and told him that it was not surprising. Ancient people in China have long recognized that the earth is active. As for whether there are humans in the center of the earth, there is no conclusion for the time being. Regarding the connection between the north and south poles in the middle of the earth, Taoism said thousands of years ago and also said that all parts of the earth are connected. These words are proved by books, but all of us didn't notice them. It is also said that there is a hole behind the Huangdi Mausoleum, which can lead to Nanjing. These Taoist sayings can be found in the Taoist scriptures.
The above story is to show that the five elements thought is absolutely related to primitive astronomy and geophysics, and it was only used in divination and fortune telling, just because our past culture did not develop scientifically.
Wang's book Birth Time and Destiny says that during the period from 3000 BC to 2500 BC, people began to learn to record important events and times. At that time, due to underdeveloped productivity and imperfect tools, people used the most primitive method of counting fingers, based on the characteristics that human beings have ten fingers.
People invented ten counting cycles, so the unit of calculation is ten cycles, which is the modern decimal system. These ten counting units were invented and should be named at the same time. The results are a (Ji m ǐ), B (yǐ), C (bǐng), D (Ng) and E (W ǐ) respectively. These counting tools are mainly used to count the sun. Ten days is a cycle. At the same time, because there is no light at night, it is very convenient and clear for people to observe the sky. People count the moon by observing its rounds. One revolution of the moon around the earth is a cycle, that is, one month. We know that it takes 27.32 days for the moon to make a revolution, but because the earth is also rotating, the observed phase change of the moon is 29.53 days.
In ancient times thousands of years BC, people could only observe the change of the moon phase, so at that time, people set the number of days in a cycle of the moon phase change as one month, that is, 29.53 days as one month. Because 365.24 days a year can only accommodate 12 months, people record 12 months. In order to distinguish it from the sun, people use another set of symbols to represent the month. They are Zi, Ugly, Yin, Mao, Chen, Wu, Wei, Shen and You.
In this way, there is a way to record the date and month. Use the ten symbols A, B, C, D, E, Ji, G, Xin, Man and Ghost to calculate the days, and use the twelve symbols Zi, Ugly, Yin, Mao, Chen, Si, Wu, Wei, Shen, You, Xu and Hai to calculate the days. In this way, the earthly branches will also be used to count the sun and the heavenly stems will also be used to count the moon. Over time, the combination of stem and branch means using a heavenly stem and a earthly branch to represent a certain day, month or even a certain year at the same time. For example, a month is represented by one and one at the same time, which is called Jiazi Month.
A specific address has its meaning and image. For example, Yin is not what we usually think of as a tiger, but actually includes some big cats, such as lions, tigers and leopards. When we define the classification of heavenly stems and earthly branches, we can also combine the birth environment and working environment at different stages of life corresponding to different birth times, such as e-wood printing for communication and network.
