(3) The origin of Chinese characters

Chinese characters have a long history and are one of the oldest writing systems in the world. The most ancient and complete Chinese characters we can see now are the oracle bone inscriptions of the Yin Ruins, which were used by people in the Shang Dynasty for more than 3,000 years. The production of Chinese characters should be much earlier than the oracle bone inscriptions. There have been many theories about the origin of Chinese characters in the past.

About Cangjie’s creation of characters. This is the most widely circulated theory about the origin of Chinese characters. Xu Shen said in "Shuowen Jiezi? Xu": "Cangjie, the history of the Yellow Emperor, saw the traces of the hooves of birds and beasts far away, and knew that the principles could be distinguished from each other, so he first made a written contract..." Li Si's "Cangjie Chapter" "Cangjie wrote books to teach his descendants"; "Huainanzi? Ben Jingxun" "In the past, Cangjie wrote books, and the sky rained with grains, and ghosts cried at night"; "Lunheng? Bone Physiology" "Cangjie's four eyes". The above ancient book records attribute the creation of writing to Cangjie. It is said that Cangjie was the historian of the Yellow Emperor. He had four bright eyes and a strange face. He could look up at the sky, observe the geography, identify the traces of birds and animals, and see what people saw. Can't see. It is said that such an extraordinary person created writing, which shows the huge impact of writing on mankind. Of course, Cangjie's creation of characters is just a legend. Chinese characters are not an individual invention, but the product of social development to a certain stage and the crystallization of collective wisdom. If there really was Cangjie in history, he might have been a collector or organizer of texts.

About knotting ropes to note things. This is the earliest statement about the origin of Chinese characters. "Book of Changes" says: "In ancient times, people used knotted ropes to rule, and later generations of saints used written deeds to change things." This means that in ancient times, there were no words, and people used knotted ropes to help remember. In later generations, saints replaced knotted ropes with words. Knotting ropes to record events is when primitive people tie ropes to remember time, number of people, men or women. The position and shape of the knots express different meanings. There is a saying in ancient Chinese books that "knotting ropes means making an appointment. If something is big, knot it in a big way." The record of "rope, small things, knotting the rope". Not only our country, but also the natives of ancient Egypt, ancient Persia, Africa, and Australia used to tie knots to record events. Knotting was widely used as a way to help remember and convey messages. However, knotting is the use of physical objects to record events and cannot be directly developed into words. It can be regarded as an exploration before the invention of words.

As for the origin of Chinese characters, it is generally believed that they originated from pictures. Lu Xun said in "Wenwaiwentan": "He (primitive man) painted a cow for a reason, because it was about bison, or hunting bison, or banning bison." He also said, " Some carved some pictures on the handles of the knives, and some painted some pictures on the door. They were close to each other and passed on word of mouth, so the number of words increased. Once the historian collected them, he could record the events perfunctorily." This vividly tells the origin of Chinese characters. In other words, pictures are used to record things and express meanings. They are directly related to the development of words, but they do not mean they are words. Only when the lines of the picture become simple and consistent, can be read out, and express a certain meaning, will it become the original text.

(4) About Oracle Bone Inscriptions

Oracle Bone Inscriptions are words carved on tortoise shells and animal bones during the Shang and Zhou dynasties. It is also called "Qiwen", "Divination", "Turtle Shell Script" and "Yinxu Script". Oracle bone inscriptions were first unearthed in Yinxu, Xiaotun Village, Anyang, Henan. They were discovered by scholars in 1899. After 1928, they were excavated many times and more than 100,000 pieces were unearthed. The writings on these tortoise shells and animal bones are mostly inscriptions and related narratives written during the Shang Dynasty's divination period. It is a relic from the Yin Dynasty to the death of Zhou in 273 years. It has recently become an important historical material for studying Shang and Zhou society. There are about 4,500 characters in oracle bone inscriptions that have been discovered, and about 1,700 characters can be recognized. There are a large number of pictophonetic characters in the writing structure. Although the strokes and positions of many numbers have not yet been finalized, judging from the legible characters, oracle bone inscriptions are a quite advanced and complete ancient writing system. In recent years, some oracle bone inscriptions from the Western Zhou Dynasty have also been discovered in Shaanxi and other places.
