The most important weapon of JH -7 is C-80 1K/803 anti-ship missile, which can carry up to four missiles. Two wingtip pylons can be used to hang the Thunderbolt -5 short-range air-to-air missile. JH 7 is also a rare aircraft with wingtip pylon in PLA.

The observed changes mainly include the installation of telescopic aerial refueling device on the left side of the nose and the addition of multiple electronic equipment antennas at various positions of the fuselage.
From the pictures obtained, it can be seen that two prototype J -7B bombers are undergoing test flight, one is full yellow primer, No.821; The front fuselage of another plane is painted with yellow primer and the rear fuselage is painted with gray, which is the current JH -7A, 822. Observers believe that this may mean that the prototype 822 is improved from JH -7A fighter-bomber, which means that all JH -7 series aircraft of our army can be modified according to the standard of JH -7B, which can quickly and greatly improve the combat effectiveness of our fighter-bomber unit.

Compared with similar fighter-bombers abroad, such as Gale, JH -7A is basically close to the latter in terms of range, bomb load and operational radius, but the technical level of turbofan -9 engine of JH -7A is lower than that of RB 199-34R engine of Gale, and the technical maturity of avionics system and related pods may be lower than that of the latter. JH -7A is not equipped with stealth defense of Gale fighter-bomber like Storm Shadow.
