Records of Zhuge Liang's engagement with Sima Yi and its ending (official history)
The only engagement was during Zhuge Liang's fourth Northern Expedition. The historical records of various versions are different. The Book of Jin, compiled by Sima Jia, said that Sima Yi won, but historians have always regarded this as a boast of Sima Yi. The accepted saying comes from the Han, Jin and Spring and Autumn Period: Kongming's fourth Northern Expedition repelled the army of former Wei general Guo Huai, harvested local wheat, and met Sima Yi in the east of Shanggao. Without waiting for the war, Zhuge Liang retreated first, and Sima Yi pursued him, but he did not dare to fight. Other Wei generals laughed at Sima Yi's fear of the enemy, so Sima Yi had to go out and send Zhang He to attack Wang Ping, but Sima Yi himself failed to conquer it. Later, when he returned to Hanzhong, Sima Yi sent Zhang He to pursue the Shu army and was killed by falling in front of the wooden door.
