Four-year-old Wang Xiaodi was taken to the clinic by his parents. They found that in the past six months, Wang Xiaodi's eyes often became cross-eyed, and he watched TV so close that it seemed that he couldn't see clearly. After detailed vision examination and mydriatic optometry, it was found that Wang Xiaodi had a hyperopia of 350 degrees in his right eye and 500 degrees in his left eye, and the best vision after correction was only 0.5. The doctor explained to parents that Wang Xiaodi suffers from esotropia and amblyopia because of his high hyperopia, and now he needs glasses for treatment. High hyperopia, looking at the near eyeball and exerting force inward, thus forming "esotropia". Dr. Chen Baoru from the Department of Pediatric Ophthalmology, Hsinchu Branch of National Taiwan University Hospital explained what esotropia is. First of all, there are four basic types of strabismus, namely esotropia, exotropia, upward strabismus and downward strabismus. Among them esotropia and exotropia are the most common in clinic. As far as Wang's younger brother is concerned, they are hyperopic esotropia. In order to see what is near clearly, a hyperopic child must focus on the near place, and his eyes will be forced inward, which looks like a cross-eye.
Generally speaking, it is normal for children to have farsightedness; But most farsightedness does not exceed 300 degrees. If hyperopia exceeds 300 degrees, we call it hyperopia. Hyperopia is easy to cause esotropia and abnormal vision development, so glasses are generally recommended. Doctors suggest that hyperopia can only develop normally if you wear glasses to correct your vision.
Dr. Chen Baoru suggested that the treatment of hyperopia esotropia should be done by doctors first. After the diagnosis of hyperopia esotropia, please let the child wear glasses to correct hyperopia, so that the child can see clearly and develop his vision normally. After wearing glasses for 3 months to 6 months, most cases of esotropia will improve or even be completely normal, unless the strabismus angle is still obvious in appearance, you can discuss with your doctor whether to operate.
In addition, it is worth noting that there is a kind of false esotropia. The reason for false esotropia is that children's noses are relatively flat, and the inner eyelids (also called inner canthus skin) of babies' eyes are relatively thick, which will cover the inner whites. It seems that there are fewer inner whites, which will look like cross-eyed. When the bridge of the nose is bigger, this situation will recover. Observe the frequency of cross-eyed children. Occasionally it may be false esotropia.
Dr. Chen Baoru said that many parents will bring babies with suspected esotropia to the clinic for examination. The ophthalmologist will check for strabismus. At first, they will use light to see if the light reflection on the cornea of both eyes falls on the center of the pupil, and then cover their eyes alternately to see if they move to determine whether they have strabismus. In these two kinds of exams, some children will need to sit upright and concentrate on cooperation. If you suspect that the baby has esotropia, even if it is false esotropia, it is generally recommended to follow up for three to six months to see if there is any change.
In the parent section, you can observe the frequency of cross-eyed children. If it only appears occasionally, don't worry too much, but it is recommended to go to the ophthalmology department for diagnosis first. But if it lasts for a long time or the skew time is getting longer and longer, you must go back to the ophthalmology clinic as soon as possible.
