The value and significance of figure-of-eight bridge

According to experts, the real value of the figure-of-eight bridge lies in its own structure and the ingenious conception of the builder. Because the bridge is built at the confluence of the three rivers and looks like a figure of eight, experts and scholars call it an "ancient overpass", which is full of praise. I don't think so. Our industrious and intelligent ancestors invented papermaking, compass, gunpowder and movable type printing. What is the significance of a stone bridge in Zeguo, a water town? But in any case, a stone bridge, built during the Jiatai period of the Southern Song Dynasty, has been well preserved for thousands of years, which is indeed a touching thing. Ancient craftsmen solved complex traffic problems in their design, which is an important physical example to study the history of Chinese bridges.

The eight-character bridge is one of the symbols of Shaoxing's history and culture, and it is also a typical representative of old Shaoxing.

The design feature of the splayed bridge is that it conforms to the existing layout of streets and houses in Shaoxing, makes good use of the terrain, and does not demolish houses or change streets, which not only solves the traffic problem, but also avoids the construction of large-scale projects in the city.

The eight-character bridge was rebuilt in the fourth year of Baodu in the Southern Song Dynasty (A.D. 1256). The existing bridge is a relic after being rebuilt in the 48th year of Qing Qianlong (A.D. 1783).
