Huazhou traditional wedding

In the traditional customs of Maoming, the marriage procedure generally includes six steps, commonly known as "six rites".

A gift: Nacai (today's "seeking luck"). The man's parents asked the matchmaker to convey his intention to marry the woman and give him a gift. If the woman has been betrothed to others, or has no intention of marrying the man, buy brown sugar, seal it with red paper, put it on the gift given by the man and return it to the man.

The second ceremony: ask the name (that is, today's "birthday post"). On behalf of the man, the matchmaker went to the woman's parents to ask the woman's name and date of birth to cooperate with the man's horoscope. If you love each other, you should return the eight-character plaque, put it on a new sunflower fan, and hold it down with betel nut, which means that the woman can choose another suitable husband.

Three Rites: Najib (now Book). If the two sides don't agree, a matchmaker should be sent to inform the woman that the man has accepted the eight-character post, and then fans, sesame and peanut candy, a pair of chickens (a man and a woman) and a ring should be sent to show that the man promises to love the woman and her husband and wife in the future and grow old together.

Four gifts: Requisition (that is, today's "gift") the man pays the woman's family property, including gold, silver, jewelry, coins, daily necessities, food and so on. The more gifts, the more expensive and luxurious, the more face the woman will have.

Five gifts: invitation period (that is, today's "Life Post"). The man's family will post the divined auspicious day book to the woman, and the woman's parents will ask someone to use their birthday and auspicious day to divine whether it is auspicious or not. If you are lucky, please ask the matchmaker to tie two red dates tied together with red rope to litchi seedlings or longan seedlings and give them to the man's family, which means wishing the in-laws to open their branches and leaves as soon as possible and have a full house of children and grandchildren. If that day is unlucky, post the date back to the man and choose another wedding date.

Six gifts: the wedding ceremony. On the same day, the groom brought a pair of capons, dyed their heads and necks red with dye, put them in a chicken cage with red paper, and tied them to the woman's house with a nine-foot-long red rope. The younger brother of the bride or the younger generation of the man will carry a bench to block the door, while female sisters and friends will crowd behind the door and ask the groom for benefits and money. After the groom enters the door, he should kneel down and offer fragrant tea to his parents-in-law, begging for "pressing the road for profit". The bride was carried by the matchmaker, who put her in a red sedan chair and shaded her with a red umbrella. The sedan chair should retreat three steps in a row to show the bride's gratitude to her parents for raising her, her attachment to her brothers and sisters, and her gratitude to relatives and friends for sending her to get married. When the bride arrives at the man's house, she will pay a New Year call to the bride and toast each other.
