Extended data

According to the current fossil evidence, the ancestors of pandas were omnivores like other bears 7 million years ago, but about 4.2 million years ago, a gene in pandas-t1r1was mutated, which directly led to the failure of the umami taste of meat amino acids. After this mutation, the panda feels terrible when eating meat, and it has no taste at all!

Since then, they mainly eat plants. In this process, because of some climate changes, the giant panda lost in the competition with some exotic omnivores, and its habitat continued to shrink. Finally, they have to eat bamboo, which is rarely eaten by other animals and is rich in fiber and difficult to digest.
