In the process of teaching, I found that many students will face a problem when editing high-definition or long-length videos. Premiere will become more and more stuck, and sometimes it can't be previewed smoothly, resulting in unsatisfactory final rendering effect. It is a waste of time to repeat rendering and modification over and over again. Here, I summarize a few tips for you to effectively improve the running speed of your software. Come and have a look!
1. Turn on GPU hardware acceleration.
Set the renderer to GPU hardware acceleration in the project settings. If the GPU acceleration option is grayed out, you can download a driver update software to update the driver of the graphics card. If it still doesn't work after the update, it may be because the graphics card version is a bit too low. In this case, you can look down on other skills.
2. Reduce the resolution of playback
The high playback quality has a great impact on the consumption of running memory. In the lower right corner of the view window, adjust the original "Complete" setting to 1/2 or 1/4, so that you don't need such a high resolution to preview when editing. Then click the small wrench next to it to see if the command for high-quality playback is turned on.
3. Clean up the media cache
Too much cache can also cause the operation process to stagnate. Select the Media Cache tab in the Preferences panel, and then click Delete Unused Items on the right to clean up the cache. Of course, be careful not to put the media cache on the C drive, let alone on the external mobile hard disk.
4. Optimize output efficiency
In the preferences panel, enter the Memory tab and set the optimized rendering to performance, which can effectively shorten the rendering time.
5. Automatic saving should not be too dense.
Although too intensive automatic saving increases security and reduces the risk of crash, it will also burden efficiency. Some students have even encountered a crash caused by automatic saving, so some editors will choose to turn off this function directly. Of course it's off or not. If you have a good habit of saving money, you can reduce the time interval of automatic saving. If not, it is recommended to sacrifice some efficiency and often save it automatically.
6. Turn off automatic refresh of generated files.
Most users don't use this function. When this function is turned on, the software will automatically update the material cache with the increase of time length, which is usually used for live output.
7. Check the updated software and graphics drivers.
If your current Premiere Pro version suddenly slows down, check whether the software version and graphics card need to be updated. Although this situation is rare, a few users do return to normal after the update. But if you are currently working on a project, you'd better not update it first, which will easily lead to some files not being opened.
8. You can no longer move the clips on the hard disk.
For some smaller projects, materials will be directly selected from the mobile hard disk for import editing. Although the mobile hard disk is the same as the solid state hard disk, it is not suitable for editing directly on it. Changing the hard disk back and forth will also make the work confusing. It is best to put the required files on a separate disk before editing.
9. Avoid using compressed coded files.
Many people may be puzzled because MP4s such as H.264 or H.265 are compressed files, but in fact, such files are not an ideal choice when editing, because the computer needs to decompress or decode them when editing, which consumes the efficiency of the system. This is why it is suggested that before editing, the material should be converted into codes such as ProRes, Cineform or DNxHD before editing, which will be much smoother.
10. Temporarily turn off the special effects of the movie.
When your image has multiple overlays and various special effects are applied, it will be very difficult to play back. Maybe you just want to confirm the time point or check whether the soundtrack is smooth, then you can turn off individual special effects (fx) or all special effects in the project. The fx button in the view window can be used to turn off or on the enabled special effects in the whole project. If you don't see this button, you can press the+key in the lower right corner of the preview window to add fx switching function.
