Why is Tsinghua University named “Tsinghua”?

Because it is located in the Tsinghua Garden

The origin of "Tsinghua University"

The location of the famous Tsinghua University at home and abroad was originally the royal garden of the Qing Dynasty - Tsinghua University Garden, hence the name.

The name "Tsinghua Garden" was given by Emperor Xianfeng of the Qing Dynasty. The original site of Qinghua Garden was part of the Xichun Garden built during the Kangxi period of the Qing Dynasty. During the Daoguang period, Xichun Garden was divided into two gardens, the east and west. The west garden was named "Jinchun Garden"; the east garden was still named "Xichun Garden". After Xianfeng ascended the throne, he changed the name of Xichun Garden in the east to "Tsinghua Garden".

The plaque behind the G-shaped hall of today's "Tsinghua Garden" is inscribed with the four characters "Shui Mu Tsing Hua". There is a couplet on both sides that says: The light of the mountains outside the threshold is extraordinary through the thousands of changes in spring, summer, autumn and winter; the clouds in the window The shadows come and go in the east, west, south and north, which is a fairyland. The four words "water, wood and Qinghua" come from the poem "You Xichi" written by Xie Shuyuan of the Jin Dynasty, "Jingzhan sings and sings, and the water and wood clear Qinghua." This "Zhan" means clarification. Because there is a pond behind the Gongzi Hall, there is a poem by Xie titled "Shui Mu Qing Hua".

In 1910, the "Tsinghua Academy" built with the Boxer Indemnity money was located in the Tsinghua Garden. This was the predecessor of Tsinghua University
