Origin of the name of Shaanxi Province

Shaanxi, this name dates back to the early years of the Western Zhou Dynasty. According to "Guoyu", in the early years of the Western Zhou Dynasty, the Zhou Dynasty used "Shaanxi Plain" (in today's Shaanxian County, Henan Province) as its boundary. The area east of Shaanxi Plain is called "Shaanxi" and is under the jurisdiction of Duke Zhao; the area west of Shaanxi Plain is called "Shaanxi" and is under the jurisdiction of Duke Zhou. Shaanxi got its name from this.

The terrain of Shaanxi Province is high in the north and south and low in the middle. It is composed of plateaus, mountains, plains and basins. Among them, the Loess Plateau accounts for 40% of the province’s land area, spanning the Yellow River and the Yangtze River. The water system spans three climate zones. The northern part of Shaanxi along the Great Wall has a mid-temperate monsoon climate, Guanzhong and most of northern Shaanxi have a warm temperate monsoon climate, and southern Shaanxi has a north subtropical monsoon climate.

Shaanxi is one of the important birthplaces of the Chinese nation and Chinese culture. 14 regimes, including the Western Zhou Dynasty, Qin Dynasty, Han Dynasty and Tang Dynasty, established their capitals in Shaanxi.
