There are probably two records about Pang Meng, one is "Xunzi's Zhenglun Chapter" which says: " Yi and Pang Meng are the best archers in the world. He thought that Yi was the only one in the world who could heal himself, so he killed Yi."
This story is somewhat similar to that of Ji Chang later. , it means that Pang Meng and Hou Yi learned archery. When he mastered Hou Yi's skills, he felt that Hou Yi was the only one in the world who had better skills than him, so he killed Hou Yi. In fact, the authenticity of the story Mencius told is very doubtful. He told this story mainly to illustrate the truth he wanted to say later.
However, various legends from later generations described Pang Meng as an ungrateful and selfish villain. In the legend of Chang'e flying to the moon, some stories say that Chang'e did not secretly take the elixir of immortality herself, but Pang Meng took advantage of Hou Yi's absence and forced Chang'e to hand over the elixir. Chang'e was forced by Pang Meng to have no choice but to take out the elixir at the critical moment and swallow it in one gulp, so she flew to the Moon Palace.
Contemporary Huang Lingeng's "Explanation of Chu Ci Chapters and Verses" believes that Pang Meng killed Hou Yi because he was greedy for his family property and wife. In short, in later legends, all kinds of bad things were blamed on Pang Meng. We still don’t know what kind of person he really is, or even whether he even exists.
