Who named typhoons?

Because a tropical cyclone usually lasts for more than a week, several tropical cyclones may appear in the ocean at the same time. With a name, it is not easy to be confused. It is said that it was an Australian forecaster who named the typhoon for the first time in the early 2th century, and named the tropical cyclone as a political figure he didn't like, so that the meteorologists could openly joke about him.

in the northwest Pacific, the official naming of tropical cyclones began in 1945, and only women's names were used at first. Later, it was said that due to the opposition of feminists, a man's name and a woman's name were used alternately from 1979.

From November 25th to December 1st, 1997, the 3th session of the Typhoon Committee of the World Meteorological Organization held in Hong Kong decided that tropical cyclones in the northwest Pacific and the South China Sea should be named with Asian style. Mainland China, Hong Kong and Macao respectively put forward a number of names of tropical cyclones, which took effect on January 1, 2.

They all adopt Asian names provided by 14 countries and regions that are members of the Typhoon Committee of WMO. The new nomenclature has two characteristics that are significantly different from those of tropical cyclones in other regions.

First, people rarely use names, most of them use the names of flowers, animals, birds, trees and even food, and some of them are descriptive adjectives.

second, the naming table does not adopt the alphabetical order of names, but according to the alphabetical order of countries or regions that provide names. Each country and region provides ten names, and there are 14 names in the list of names.

Under normal circumstances, the pre-established naming list is reused year after year in sequence, but in special circumstances, some names may "retire" from the famous list. When a typhoon caused particularly serious disasters or casualties, it became a well-known typhoon. In order to prevent it from having the same name as other typhoons, the name was deleted from the current naming list and will not be used in the future.
