Zen Master Guyue Jingcheng of Wutai Puji , the dharma heir of Zen Master Yue Xicheng of Dagang, Jinling, with a common surname of Zhang and a native of Xihe. When Zen Master Jingcheng was born, two monks happened to come to his door. His father was very happy and asked the two monks to name the child. One of the monks said: "This son is very special and should be named Qingzheng."
Zen Master Jingcheng's parents died when he was young, and he was helpless in life, so he decided to become a monk. Go to Jinhe Temple to get your hair done. At first, Zen Master Jingcheng's teacher asked him to study sutras and treatises, but he was not interested. Then he asked him to practice the method of chanting Buddha's name, but he also felt that it was not very suitable for him. Less than a year after Zen Master Jingci became a monk, his mentor moved away. Therefore, Zen Master Jingcheng switched to Zen Master Wutai Shan.
After Zen Master Shan’s constant hammering and forcing day and night, one day, Zen Master Jingcheng suddenly felt that his doubts were gone and he felt relieved. Later, I heard that the old man Yuexi was holding a Dharma ceremony in Guang'en, so Zen Master Jingcheng went to pay homage and ask for confirmation.
After the first greeting, the old man Yuexi said several words in succession, asking Zen Master Jingcheng to repay him. Zen Master Jingcheng was sweating all over his body and could not respond. So the old man Yuexi asked him to investigate the Zhaozhou wordless public case. After studying for a long time, Zen Master Jingcheng suddenly realized something. The old man of Yuexi then gave him the seal and gave him the robe and whisk.
After Zen Master Jingcheng obtained the Dharma, he traveled southward. One day, Zen Master Jingcheng took a boat to cross the Yellow River. The boat capsized on the way, and all the travelers fell into the river. Zen Master Jingcheng managed to survive by grabbing a piece of driftwood. This boat capsizing incident deeply touched Zen Master Jingci. He reflected on the fact that his gains were not clear and his feet were not yet solid, so he swore: "Those who return from this journey without enlightenment will be like a river (sic)!"
From then on, Zen Master Jingcheng studied deeply. Soon he came to Sichuan and lived in seclusion in Feixue Mountain, alone, and practiced meditation for three years. His meditation skills are very good. One day while cooking, Zen Master Jingcheng unknowingly entered a state of concentration. When he came out of concentration, he opened the lid and saw that the rice in the pot was covered with white hairs. He once was in concentration and heard people talking a hundred miles away.
Because Zen Master Jingcheng sat on the ground and meditated for a long time, his legs were cold and damp, and he could not stand or walk. Thanks to someone who found him and carried him to a dry place in the back mountain. After a period of breath management, his foot paralysis was finally cured.
One day, Zen Master Jingcheng was meditating on a tree. Just when he had just entered the state of deep silence, he suddenly heard the sound of firecrackers in a nearby village, and he finally felt empty. From then on, everything about him was clear and wonderful.
Soon after, Zen Master Jingcheng went to pay homage to Zen Master Fuyungu and asked for confirmation.
When Zen Master Yungu saw that Zen Master Jingcheng looked so lonely, he asked: "You seem to be a dead person. Let me ask you, how can a dead person be alive?" "How?"
Zen Master Jingcheng said, "The eyebrows are raised horizontally, the nostrils are big and the head is drooping."
Zen Master Yungu said again. Question: "What is the meaning of no words?"
Zen Master Jingcheng said: "The wind moves through the grass and the grass is cut, and the water will fall into place."
Zen Master Yungu further asked: "The earth is flat and the void is shattered. Where can you settle down and live your life?"
Zen Master Jingcheng said: "The dew on Mount Yunxiao, the sun rises in the sea and sky Qing."
Zen Master Yungu knew that he had fulfilled his purpose, so he approved it.
In the Ming Dynasty (1457), Zen Master Jingcheng returned to Qingliang Mountain in Shanxi, and soon his reputation spread far and wide. Dai Fan (the vassal king who guarded the Wutai area) once invited Zen Master Jingcheng to teach the Dharma inside, and he felt that the light illuminated the inside and outside. The vassal king was so happy that he ordered a special temple to be built in Huayan Valley, named "Puji", and asked Zen Master Jingcheng to be the abbot to conduct religious teachings and receive the public. For a time, Dharma mats were prosperous and monks gathered in large numbers.
During his lifetime, Zen Master Jingci published "Qingliang Quotations" and "Mountain Residence Poems".
Zen Master Jingcheng’s mountain residence poems are very distinctive and can be compared with Zen Master Shiwu Qinggong. There are several songs recorded now -
