Garden refers to the royal garden. Ancient courts often had gardens with palaces, also called palaces.
This big garden is 100 miles wide, with natural vegetation, wild or domestic birds and animals, and palace buildings for living, entertainment and feasting. There is a small garden in the palace. In addition, there are independent palaces built in the suburbs or other places.
Famous palaces include Shanglin Palace and Zhangjian Palace in the Han Dynasty, Lin Yuan and Longteng Garden in the Northern and Southern Dynasties, Xiyuan in the Sui Dynasty, Xingqing Palace, Daming Palace and Jiucheng Palace in the Tang Dynasty, Genyue in the Northern Song Dynasty, Xiyuan in the Ming Dynasty (now Beihai and Zhongnanhai), Yuanmingyuan, Qingyi Garden (later expanded into Summer Palace) and Summer Resort in the Qing Dynasty.
