Because the locals call themselves the Kingdom of Rakshasa, and Haishi means mirage. Here, it is said that the place where Ma Ji goes is the fairyland, so Pu Songling named the novel "Rakshasa" "Sea City".
The story goes like this. The protagonist, the scholar Ma Ji, is a handsome guy in the local area. He usually loves to sing female roles. At the age of 14, he passed the examination as a scholar and later went into business with his father. One day, he and his friends went overseas for business and accidentally broke into a distant mysterious country - the Rakshasa Kingdom. Things are the opposite in this country, where ugliness is considered beautiful.
The officials there are also selected and appointed based on ugliness. The uglier they are, the bigger the official they will be. Those who are not ugly can only be minor officials. If it's the same, then it would be unlucky that the parents would throw it away immediately after birth.
When Ma Ji first arrived in the Rakshasa Kingdom, he was regarded as a monster by the locals because he looked very different from the locals. When people saw him, they were frightened and fled in all directions.
In order to survive, Ma Ji had to follow the local customs and change his appearance to cater to the local people's aesthetics.

Ma Ji was very curious, so he went to the sea market with the villagers. By chance, he met His Royal Highness the Crown Prince. The Crown Prince thought he was an unusual person, so he introduced him to the Dragon King.
The Dragon King asked him to write an article about the sea market. Ma Ji wrote it right away without hesitation. The Dragon King appreciated it so much that he hosted a banquet for him and even married his daughter to him. He married his wife and named him Prince Consort Captain.
The princess was as beautiful as a fairy, so the couple lived together beautifully. Time passed slowly, and soon Ma Ji missed his hometown. Before leaving, the princess and the Dragon King also gave Ma Ji many pearl treasures.

One day, the princess appeared in her daughter's boudoir and gave her an eight-foot-tall coral tree as her dowry. As soon as Ma Ji heard that the princess was back, he hurriedly ran into the house. Suddenly, a thunder exploded through the roof, and the princess disappeared from sight.
