Citizens should take their father's or mother's surname, but they are allowed to adopt the surnames of both parents. Names must not contain the following content: (1) harming the dignity of the country or nation) violating good national customs 3) likely to cause adverse reactions or misunderstandings from the public. Except for those using ethnic characters or written or translated Chinese characters, the name should be more than two Chinese characters and less than six Chinese characters.

Article 3 of the "Regulations on Household Registration of the People's Republic of China" The household registration work is in charge of the public security organs at all levels. In cities and towns with public security police stations, the jurisdiction of the police station shall be the household registration jurisdiction; in townships and towns without public security police stations, the jurisdiction of the township or town shall be the household registration jurisdiction. Township and town people's committees and public security police stations are the household registration authorities. For those who live in government agencies, groups, schools, enterprises, institutions and other units or in public dormitories, each unit shall designate a special person to assist the household registration authority in handling household registration; for households living in scattered places, the household registration authority shall directly handle household registration . For the household registration of non-active military personnel living in military agencies and military dormitories, each unit shall designate a dedicated person to assist the household registration authority in handling household registration. For the household registration of production cooperatives such as agriculture, fishery, salt industry, forestry, animal husbandry, handicrafts, etc., the cooperative shall designate a special person to assist the household registration authority in handling household registration. For households other than cooperatives, household registration shall be handled directly by the household registration authority. Article 4 The household registration authority shall establish a household registration book. In cities, rivers, and towns with public security stations, each household should be issued a household registration book. Household registration books are issued to cooperatives in rural areas; household registration books are not issued to households outside cooperatives. The household registration book and the matters recorded in the household registration book have the effect of proving citizenship. Article 5 Household registration shall be based on household units. Those who live in the same place as the person in charge are considered to be one household, with the person in charge being the head of the household. A single person living alone has his own household, with himself as the head of the household. Those who live in agencies, groups, schools, enterprises, institutions and other units or in public dormitories must open one household or separate households. The head of household is responsible for reporting household registration in accordance with the provisions of these regulations.
