Watch the highlights of the 2020 Beijing Auto Show here

On September 26, 2020, the Beijing International Auto Show officially launched. At this auto show, each brand brought its own blockbuster models, such as the new Mercedes-Benz S-Class and E-Class; BMW 5 Series; Porsche Panamera; Hongqi HS7+ and more than a hundred models.

Yingdong ENPULSE? Concept Car

Although the major brands adopt different approaches, at a time when the entry threshold for “high-end configurations” is already low, major car companies seem to I don't plan to have a battle over the configuration. More people want to put more effort into design language, workmanship materials, and brand influence. Judging from the current model strategies of the leading forces, the overall auto market is about to officially cater to the younger Generation Z group.

This concept pure electric high-performance roadster from GAC is an area that many Chinese brands have not set foot in and are unwilling to touch. Open-top trots have always been a favorite among young people, but due to the equally young wallets, this type of model has always been highly praised and received little response. But as the powerful post-00 generation is about to enter society, this situation may change. GAC may have seen such a market opportunity.

Generally speaking, the compact and sharp body shape of ENPULSE has the feel of the earlier Jaguar E-TYPE and Mazda MX-5. However, benefiting from the structural advantages of pure electric vehicles, the front design achieves a simpler visual experience. Large lines and grooves are also added to the side design, adding to the vehicle's sense of strength.

However, in terms of interior design, ENPULSE does not continue the sharp style of the exterior styling. Instead, a more "Japanese" fabric style is adopted, and warm colors are also used in the color matching. The diode-like design located in the center of the vehicle integrates the seat adjustment and shift knob, which is very cyberpunk.

Great Wall? Chaopai

Chaopai was personally created by Simons, global design director and vice president of Great Wall Motors. Its design concept adopts a combination of retro, technology and time travel.

At first glance, the trendy overall styling is reminiscent of the Lada Riva produced by the Russian car manufacturer AvtoVAZ. The exterior design does not have too many line modifications, but the rounded shape has almost perfect proportions.

The interior design shows more retro concepts and incorporates some cyberpunk embellishments.

Different from the general vehicle design, Chaopai has put a lot of effort into the door design. Contrasting colors, stitching, and silver trim create a comfortable visual experience like a home loft.

In general, whether it is soliciting names from netizens or various marketing strategies, Chaopai reflects the absolutely liberal corporate philosophy of Great Wall Motors. And this kind of brand power building may affect the car purchasing choices of the new generation in the next few years.

Citroen 19_19

Citroen, which has always taken an unusual approach at this auto show, still brought us a different concept model -?Citro?n?19_19.

It is easy to see from the appearance that the design of this pure electric travel model with the vision of "escape from the city" is inspired by the aviation industry. The overall streamlined design and appropriate color matching are visually pleasing. Feel.

According to official information, the interior adopts the "extension of home" design concept. This design is similar to the trendy style of the Great Wall, giving drivers and passengers a sense of home comfort in terms of atmosphere creation. In addition to various unrealistic designs, Citro?n 19_19 adopts the very popular autonomous driving design concept.

In autonomous driving mode, the steering wheel and accelerator/brake pedals will retract into the center console, giving the driver more space to stretch out. This concept is very similar to ICONA's Nucleus, but Nucleus will pay more attention to the proportion of life.

Audi Q5L Sportback

The Audi Q5L Sportback, which debuted for the first time, can be regarded as a product extension and complement to the Audi e-tron model. One is an attempt at a new design concept, and the other is taking into account the benchmark vacancies of Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe and BMW X4. This time, fans who like Q5 finally have a handsome fastback.

However, unlike the GLC Coupe and X4, Audi's Sportback does not adopt a one-stop design concept. In the middle section of the rear, Audi has added a double-layer rear wing design, which naturally takes into account Audi's sports brand attributes and differentiates it from the elegance of Mercedes-Benz and the hardcoreness of BMW. From the visual experience of the actual car, it is indeed more dynamic.

The slip-back design of the double-layer rear wing may lack a certain degree of distinction from ordinary Q5 models in the eyes of the general public. For ordinary consumers, perhaps the most intuitive feeling is "this car looks like the Q5, but it feels a little different." However, this slightly subtle feeling may also be an experience that fastback owners want.

BMW 5 Series

As the top player in the mid- to large-sized car market, the changes to the BMW 5 Series have always attracted much attention. This time, the joint redesign with Mercedes-Benz is also a hot topic. Happy content.

The subversive change in car lights has changed the 5 Series from the classic angel headlights to a new double "L" design. This bold change may lead to different choices among car owners when replacing new cars.

In terms of details, youthful modifications have appeared. However, in terms of overall style control, BMW did not adopt Mercedes-Benz’s more radical and youthful design language. In addition to the changes in the headlights, the exaggerated double kidney design of the 4 Series is not used on the 5 Series, allowing the 5 Series to continue its consistent calm aura.

In terms of brand strategy, BMW does not want to make the entire brand exclusive to young people too much. It seems to leave the rejuvenation to the younger brothers below the 5 Series. For BMW, the radical 4 Series and the 3 Series suitable for all ages are both good strategic models, while the 5 Series only needs to be stable.

Mercedes-Benz E? Class

Unlike the BMW 5 Series, Mercedes-Benz has fully applied rejuvenation this time, and the E-Class, which is the mainstay this time, reflects this concept. Whether it is the extension of the horizontal lines on both sides of the air intake grille, the change in the shape of the lights, or the triangular split design at the rear of the car. This time, the significant changes to the front and rear almost make the E-Class a new car.

Another additional attribute of Mercedes-Benz also adds a touch of controversy to the design of the E-Class. Although the vertical logo and the sports version use the same design language, to the naked eye, the large logo shape of the sports version is more suitable for the new lamp design language, and the sports version is more in line with the aura of Mercedes-Benz than previously promoted.

Furthermore, the E-class steering wheel also adopts a new shape. Different from the previous redesigned chrome-plated silver decoration, this time the steering wheel design reduces the proportion of atmosphere creation and deepens the proportion of functional design. This design change is also in line with more 5G real-time interconnection design concepts on the S-class, and can be seen as paving the way for the introduction of more functions in the future.

Summary

The replacement of old and new things will always be accompanied by a certain degree of controversy. The overall rejuvenation of the vehicle market is undergoing such a change. And the leading established companies need to change under such pressure to cater to the growing young group.

The auto show is still going on, keep paying attention to Icona, we will bring you more design explanations of new models at the auto show. If you have any car models you are interested in or want to see, please tell me in the comment area~
