Penglai is a famous residence of gods and fairyland in ancient Chinese folk and Taoist legends.
Legend has it that in the 3rd century BC, China’s ruler Qin Shihuang heard that a medicine for immortality was produced here and that there were also gods and goddesses. So he ordered a man named Xu Fu to lead many boys and girls to search for the magic medicine. Later, Chinese Taoism regarded this place as a holy place. Penglai Pavilion is located on a cliff by the sea in the north of Penglai City, Shandong Province. It was first built in the Song Dynasty in 1070. Together with Tengwang Pavilion, Yellow Crane Tower and Yueyang Tower, it is known as the four famous towers in ancient China. Penglai Pavilion is an ancient Chinese building complex, mainly composed of Luzu Hall, Sanqing Hall, Penglai Pavilion, Tianhou Palace, Amituo Temple and other buildings.
