On December 16, 1920, at 8:06 pm, the Liupanshan mountainous area in the Haiyuan Loess Plateau of Ningxia shook violently with a roar like thunder. The mountains slide down into the river valleys. In just a few minutes, landslides and ground cracks occurred in more than 20,000 square kilometers in the earthquake zone, and houses collapsed, making it as tragic as ever. Seismic waves circled the earth seven times, and the strong shaking lasted for nearly 20 minutes. All 96 seismic stations around the world recorded this major earthquake, so it was called the "Global Earthquake" by geoscientists.
According to estimates, the Haiyuan earthquake had a magnitude of 8.5 and affected most of China. The energy released was equivalent to 220 million tons of TNT explosives or 11.2 Tangshan earthquakes.
The "global earthquake" that occurred in Haiyuan was by no means an accident. It was determined by its specific geological structural environment. From the perspective of geological structure, Haiyuan is located at the junction of the Alxa Massif and the Ordos Massif, and its main structure is the Wushaoling-Liupanshan arc structural belt. Scientists named this fault zone "Haiyuan Active Fault Zone".
After the earthquake, abnormal landforms such as Duantou Ditch, Duanwei Ditch, Duansai Pond, and Trough Valley were common within the 240-kilometer range of the "Haiyuan Active Fault Zone." These complex landforms carry large patterns and small details related to earthquakes, release earthquake information from the past to the present, and are living materials for studying earthquakes.
Although many major earthquakes occur around the world every year, it is extremely rare to leave rich geological relics like the Haiyuan Earthquake, and even fewer have important scientific investigation value. The geological relics of the Haiyuan Earthquake are unique and monopolistic. The Haiyuan earthquake fault zone is the most complete earthquake geological relic with the highest research and utilization value in the world. It is a "living teaching material".
Recently, the State Seismological Administration officially approved the Maipo earthquake-active fault site in Tancheng County as a national-level typical earthquake site. This is also the second national-level typical earthquake site established in my country so far.
The Maipo seismically active fault site is located on the west slope of Maling Mountain east of Maipo Village, Gaofengtou Town, in the middle of the Tanlu Fault Zone, the largest fault zone in eastern my country.

There are as many as fifty or sixty pearl-shaped earthquake barrier lake sites formed after the earthquake, mainly distributed in the Lanni River Basin. The Xiji Dangjiacha earthquake site is large in scale and relatively well protected, making it a valuable natural heritage. Xu Xiwei, a researcher at the China Seismological Administration and chief expert on earthquakes, conducted a demonstration and inspection of Xiji County’s declaration of Dangjiacha national-level earthquake relics. He believes that this area is very valuable for carrying out earthquake scientific research, tectonic movement and disaster prevention studies. It has high scientific value and is a good place for science popularization and education on earthquake prevention and disaster reduction. At the same time, as a national-level poverty-stricken area with "the most barren environment in the world", Xiji applied for and obtained the "national brand" signboard of "Xiji Dangjiacha Earthquake Landslide Barrier Lake Site", which is also conducive to the development of the county's tourism industry and can Drive and promote the local economy and accelerate the pace of mountainous people getting rid of poverty and becoming rich.
