What does Haizi in Jiuzhaigou mean?

Haizi is the local people’s nickname for the “lake” in Jiuzhaigou. Haizi refers to the plateau lake in Jiuzhaigou Valley. Because the people there have lived inland for a long time and yearn for the sea very much, they call the lakes everywhere around them Haizi, which means "son of the sea."

Jiuzhaigou Haizi is located in Nanping County, Sichuan Province, at the northern foot of Erna Peak in the southern section of Minshan Mountain. It is one of the sources of the Baishui River, a tributary of the Jialing River. It is named Jiuzhaigou because there are nine Tibetan villages.

The beauty of Zhaigou Haizi Group is directly related to the Tibetan compatriots who have lived here for a long time and their culture. The mysterious and solemn Tibetan culture with distinctive regional characteristics is integrated with the mountains, rivers and scenery here and complements each other. They love their home, so the lake can remain so ethereal and clear. It is said that the water color of Jiuzhaigou Haizi is so blue and it must be very rich in minerals such as copper salts, which is not suitable for the growth of fish. However, almost in the first lake here, swarms of fish can be seen swimming freely. As if flying in the blue sky, the little things shuttled under the sun, bringing so much agility to this quiet and virginal water.

Jiuzhaigou National Nature Reserve is located in Jiuzhaigou County, Aba Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture, Sichuan Province. It is the first nature reserve in China with the main purpose of protecting natural scenery. It is also a famous scenic spot in China and a national civilized landscape. The tourist area demonstration site has been included in the "World Natural Heritage List" and the "Man and the Biosphere" protection network.

Jiuzhaigou is a ravine valley with a depth of more than 50 kilometers, with a total area of ??650.74hm?, most of which is covered by forest. It was named because there are nine Tibetan villages in the ditch, including Shuzheng, Heye and Zechawa, which are located in this group of mountain lakes. In 2009, the 320-meter-wide Nuorilang Waterfall was selected as the widest waterfall in China by the China World Records Association.

Due to the risk of local disasters, Jiuzhaigou Scenic Area has adopted temporary closure measures from July 1, 2018 and has suspended receiving tourists.
