History of Tianjin Children’s Hospital

The predecessor of Tianjin Children’s Hospital was the Maternity and Infant Hospital. It was built in 1881 on Hai Avenue (now No. 152 Dagu Road) in Zizhulin District with donations from Li Hongzhang. American missionary Howard served as the first president. .

In 1915, the Maternity and Infant Hospital was moved from the old site on Hai Avenue to the new site on Nanguan Street, and was named "China Christian Methodist Maternity and Infant Hospital". American missionary Gu Egg was the director. In this year, outpatient clinics, outpatient visits, treatment of patients, and hospitalization of inpatients were started, and a hospital-affiliated nursing school was established.

In 1947, the number of outpatient visits reached 13,074, and the annual inpatient admissions were 1,156. On December 3, 1947, the Maternity and Infant Hospital filed a case with the Tianjin Municipal Government Health Bureau, with Zhu Xianyi as acting president. The hospital has 38 employees (including 20 medical staff) and 60 beds.

After Tianjin was liberated on January 15, 1949, the hospital was renamed Tianjin Private Maternity and Infant Hospital. There are 38 people in the hospital, including internal medicine, surgery, obstetrics and gynecology, pediatrics, ophthalmology, ear and nose. The laryngology department, tuberculosis department, X-ray department, and electrotherapy department have 50 beds (including: 2 special-class beds, 5 first-class beds, 7 second-class beds, and 36 third-class beds).

From April to October 1988, a medical care unit was opened on the third floor of the emergency center, and an extracardiac care unit was opened on the fourth floor, increasing the number of beds in the hospital from 501 to 521. Construction of the administrative teaching building started on the east side of the building (completed in November 1989). In order to give full play to the role of the retired medical staff of our hospital, with the approval of the Municipal Health Bureau, the "Children's Disease Specialist Hospital" was officially established on October 18 (opening on October 22), with a retired cadre as the director.

The Second International Pediatric Surgery Symposium was held in Tianjin from October 24 to 27, 1988, sponsored by the Children's Hospital. Representatives from China, the United States, the United Kingdom, Japan, the Netherlands and other countries attended the conference*** More than 200 people, including Fan Quan, deputy director of the Municipal People's Congress Standing Committee, and Qian Qiyao, deputy mayor, attended the opening ceremony and delivered speeches. In November 1988, Children's Hospital cooperated with the Tianjin Branch of the Chinese Medical Association to host the first academic conference on pediatric otolaryngology, with more than 100 representatives from all over the country participating.

On June 1, 1991, the "Conference to Celebrate the 40th Anniversary of the Children's Hospital" was held in the Cadre Club. At the meeting, Professor Xie Huazhen, executive chairman of the Canada-China Children's Health Foundation, was appointed as the honorary president of the Children's Hospital. In order to improve the scientific research working environment, construction of the "Comprehensive Science and Technology Building" (delivered for use in 1993) began in October on the north side of the inpatient building.

At the end of 1992, the hospital had 1,187 employees, with 20 functional departments, 16 medical and technical departments, as well as a pediatric research institute, a nursing branch, a clinical teaching department for pediatrics, and a children's disease specialist hospital. , the hospital has 16 wards and 521 beds.
