What do three mountains and five mountains mean?

There are many famous mountains in China, among which three mountains and five mountains are the most famous. Three mountains generally refer to Huangshan Mountain, Lushan Mountain and Yandang Mountain. The five mountains are Mount Tai in Dongyue, Huashan in Xiyue, Hengshan in Nanyue, Hengshan in Beiyue and Songshan in Zhongyue.

Three Mountains

There are different opinions about which three mountains are. There are two main schools of thought:

The first one holds that the Three Mountains do not really exist but are legends or myths, referring to Penglai, the abbot and Yingzhou. This statement comes from Sima Qian's "Historical Records of the First Qin Emperor", "Qi Xufu and others wrote that there are three sacred mountains in the sea, named Penglai, Abbot and Yingzhou". The Qi people Xu Fu and others wrote to Qin Shihuang that there are three famous mountains inhabited by immortals in the East China Sea, named Penglai Mountain, Abbot Mountain and Yingzhou Mountain.

The second view is that Theory of Three Represents's famous mountains should be found outside the Five Mountains, and the three mountains refer to Huangshan Mountain in Anhui, Lushan Mountain in Jiangxi and Yandang Mountain in Zhejiang, which is the most widely spread. Of course, some people think that the three mountains refer to Huangshan Mountain in Anhui, Lushan Mountain in Jiangxi and Emei Mountain in Sichuan. Either way, Huangshan and Lushan are basically included.

The author believes that myths and legends are an important part of China culture. The three mountains refer to Penglai, the abbot and Yingzhou, and they are inextricably linked with Taoism. Moreover, there is an endorsement of the official Historical Records, so it is more valuable and meaningful to refer to Penglai, the abbot and Yingzhou specifically, and it is more mysterious.
