The naming rights of asteroids belong to the discoverers. In the early days, I liked to use the name of the goddess, but later I used the abbreviation of the name of a person, a place, a flower, or even an organization. Some asteroids and asteroids are particularly famous, such as the Trojan Group, the Apollo Group, Ikarus, Eros, Hidalgo, etc.
The first asteroid was discovered by Piazzi on Sicily in 1801, and he named the star Ferdinand Ceres. The first part is named after Ceres, the patron saint of Sicily, and the latter part is named after King Ferdinand IV of Naples. But international academics were not satisfied with this, so the second part was deleted. Therefore the official name of the first asteroid is Asteroid 1 Ceres.
Since then, according to this tradition, the asteroids discovered have been named after Roman or Greek gods, such as Pallas, Vesta, Justice, etc. But as more and more asteroids were discovered, the names of the classical gods were eventually used up. Therefore, asteroids were later named after the discoverer's wife, historical or other important figures, cities, mythological stories or other mythological gods.
Extended information:
Naming an asteroid The name of an asteroid consists of two parts: a permanent number in the front and a name in the end. Each confirmed asteroid is first assigned a permanent number, and the discoverer can suggest a name for the asteroid. The name must be approved by the International Astronomical Union before it is officially adopted.
If the asteroid's orbit can be determined accurately enough, then its discovery will be confirmed. Before then, it would have had a temporary number consisting of the year it was found and two letters, such as 2004 DW.
