What does "you are a gentleman's scholar, and you do nothing but a villain's scholar" mean in The Analects of Confucius?
Nan's The Analects of Confucius is basically nonsense. We should read Zhu's Notes on Four Books and Qian Mu's New Interpretation of the Analects of Confucius. The difference between Confucian gentlemen and villains lies in personal morality first. He is a gentleman with benevolence, courtesy, wisdom and faith, and the essence of benevolence lies in filial piety. A gentleman and a Confucian are people who are consistent in their words and deeds. A villain's Confucianism is a person who looks like Confucianism on the surface, but doesn't look like Confucianism at heart. We can say that the former is a true gentleman and the latter is a hypocrite.
