Who are Liu Siqi’s children?

In February 1962, Liu Siqi followed Mao Zedong's persuasion and remarried to Yang Maozhi, a teacher at the Air Force Academy. They had two sons and two daughters. The eldest son was named Yang Xiaoying in memory of her ex-husband Mao Anying. There is no information available about the specific circumstances of the children, so I don’t know much about them. She and Mao Anying had only been married for a year, and Mao Anying died as a volunteer in the Korean battlefield. Moreover, Liu Siqi was only about 20 years old when they got married and was still studying. Therefore, they did not have children.

Liu Siqi and Mao Anying

Liu Siqi, also known as Liu Songlin, was born in Hubei on March 2, 1930. He is the wife of Mao Anying, the daughter of martyr Liu Qianchu and Zhang Wenqiu. Liu Siqi's mother Zhang Wenqiu was Mao Zedong's revolutionary comrade. In 1927, Mao Zedong told Zhang Wenqiu: If you give birth to a daughter, we will "get married."

Mao Anying, Liu Siqi

Mao Anying, Mao Zedong’s eldest son, is about 8 years older than Liu Siqi. She married Liu Siqi on October 15, 1949. After the outbreak of the Korean War, Mao Anying joined the Volunteer Army and unfortunately died in North Korea on November 25, 1950. On October 14, 1950, the next day was the first wedding anniversary of the newlyweds. Mao Anying said to his wife: "I will go on a 'business trip' to a far away place tomorrow. Communication there is not convenient. If you don't receive the call, Don't be anxious about my letter, there will definitely be news." Mao Anying did not answer Liu Siqi's questioning, and also made three requirements for Liu Siqi: complete your studies no matter what the situation is, and don't rush to work first; I go to Zhongnanhai every week to visit my father (Mao Zedong) and take good care of his younger brother Mao Anqing for him. When they parted, Mao Anying turned around, bowed deeply to Liu Siqi, and gave her a big hug.

All Mao Anying said to Liu Siqi was to carry out the mission. However, in less than a month, Mao Anying died on the Korean battlefield. People around her deliberately concealed it. It was not until three years later that she learned that the place where Mao Anying went on a business trip was North Korea, and Anying had already died on the Korean battlefield.

Liu Siqi’s family portrait

After Mao Anying’s death, Liu Siqi went to study in the Soviet Union with Mao Zedong’s consent. From September 1955 to September 1957, Liu Siqi studied in the Department of Mathematics of Moscow State University. In the autumn of 1961, she was assigned to a certain unit of the People's Liberation Army Engineering Corps to work as a translator until her retirement.

Although Liu Siqi has formed a new family with four children around her knees, her longing and memory of Mao Anying have not faded over time. In 2006, Liu Siqi, who was nearly eighty years old, visited North Korea for the fourth time and came to Dayu Cave for the first time - the place where Anying died. She knelt down deeply and said, "Anying, today I bring my children to visit your grave. They respect you and miss you. I am old and am no longer the same Siqi I used to be. Once I cannot come to visit your grave due to old age or illness, my children will come to visit you on my behalf. They will always be their loved ones."
