As a foil, she foils the good intentions and snobbish ridicule of the Jia family.
Grandma Liu has been a widow for many years, living off only two acres of thin farmland. One of her daughters married into a descendant of the Wang family who is related to Mrs. Wang’s natal family, named Wang Gouer.
Grandma Liu lived on two acres of thin farmland. Her son-in-law, Wang Gouer, had no one to take care of his son and daughter, Qing'er Baner, so he took her home to live.
Grandma Liu relied on her son-in-law to make a living, so she devoted herself to the livelihood of her son-in-law and his family. As the year was approaching, her family was so poor that she didn't even have money to buy food and clothing for the winter.
Wang Gou'er was feeling annoyed at home, and Mrs. Liu didn't dare to contradict her. Grandma Liu couldn't stand it, so she asked Wang Gou'er to seek help from the Wang family. Wang Gou'er felt that he was being slapped and refused to go.
Grandma Liu said the words of great wisdom of the working people: "It's up to people to plan things, and it's up to God to make things happen. We have found it. Depending on the blessing of Bodhisattva, there are some opportunities, but we don't know." Grandma Liu said He took his grandson Ban'er to Rongguo Mansion to look for Mrs. Wang, the former second lady of the Wang family and now the second wife of the Jia family's Rongguo Mansion, for relief.
This led to the two classic events in A Dream of Red Mansions when Grandma Liu entered the Rongguo Mansion, and also brought about a marriage between her grandson Wang Baner and Wang Xifeng’s daughter Jia Qiao.
