Lu Xun (1881.9.25-1936.10.19),
Originally named Zhou Zhangshou and Zhou Shuren, with the courtesy names of Yushan and Yuting, and later changed to Hecai.
Lu Xun was born in Shaoxing, Zhejiang Province in September 1881. At that time, his grandfather Zhou Fuqing was an official in Beijing. When the good news of having a grandson reached him, Zhang Zhidong happened to be visiting, so his grandfather named his grandson "A Zhang" after the grandson he met. He was given the nickname "Zhang Shou" and the nickname "Yushan". Lu Xun was named after him when he entered a private school at the age of seven. In Shaoxing dialect, "Yushan" and "umbrella" have similar sounds. His classmates often teased him about this, so they asked his grandfather to change his name. Later he changed his name to Yuting, and then to Yucai. In 1898, 17-year-old Lu Xun left his hometown and came to Nanjing to join an uncle named Jiao Sheng and entered the Jiangnan Naval Academy.
Zhou Jiaosheng himself was an official in the Naval Academy, but he had great contempt for this kind of Westernization academy. He believed that the descendants of his clan would not follow the right path of honoring their ancestors, but came here to prepare to be a sailor who waved the flag. , it really loses the elegance of a "famous family". In order not to embarrass his ancestors, he felt that it was inappropriate for Lu Xun to use the name in the family tree, so he changed the real name of "Zhang Shou" to "Shu Ren", which means "it takes ten years to grow trees and a hundred years to cultivate people".
In May 1918, with the encouragement and introduction of Qian Xuantong, Lu Xun published the first vernacular novel "Diary of a Madman" in the history of modern Chinese literature in Volume 4, No. 5 of "New Youth". Used the pen name "Lu Xun" for the first time. Before "Lu Xun", the pen name "Xun Xing" was also used. Lu Xun used more than 140 pen names in his life, and he became famous all over the world under the pen name "Lu Xun". The pen name is "Lu Xun". One of the reasons and reasons is that his mother's surname is Lu, and his second mother usually calls him "Xun'er", so he was named "Lu Xun".
Additional: The pen name "Lu Xun" has always had two interpretations: one is that the word "Lu" is the surname of Mr. Lu Xun's mother, and the "Lu Town" often mentioned in his novels is His mother's hometown; "Xun" is his nickname, so the term "Brother Xun" also appears in his novels. Another explanation is from Mr. Xu Shoushang, a close friend of Mr. Lu Xun. He personally asked Mr. Lu Xun, and Mr. Lu Xun smiled and said: "It means being stupid and acting quickly." This is Mr. Lu Xun's self-effacing remarks. Both of these statements are interpreted literally and are consistent with Lu Xun’s life, so they both make sense.
Recently someone discovered a third explanation. It is believed that the ancient meaning of the word "Xun" is wolf. For the source, see "Erya Shi Beast": "The son of a wolf who is extremely powerful is called Xun." According to this explanation, "Lu Xun" refers to a brave and powerful son of the wolf. The historian Hou Wailu holds this view. He said that Lu Xun was a rebel in feudal society. His representative novel "Diary of a Madman" criticized the "cannibalism" system of feudal society. He chose these two words as his name to clearly express his willingness to be a "wolf son". "Self-proclaimed, the voice of a complete break with the feudal social system.
It is said that Hou Wailu mentioned this explanation to Xu Guangping, Lu Xun’s wife, and Xu Guangping thanked him repeatedly and expressed his approval.
In addition, Lu Xun also had many different pen names, which made it troublesome to write. Just Lu Xun would be enough.
Xu Shoushang once explained this: "(1) My mother's surname is Lu, (2) Zhou Lu is from a country with the same surname, and (3) it means stupid and quick."
