The legend of Bayu

The custom of a son-in-law giving mackerel to his father-in-law and mother-in-law has its origins. Before the island city opened as a port, there was a simple and unpretentious story circulating among the people. It said that a child named Xiao Wu, whose parents had died, was adopted by a loyal and charitable old man. When he grew up, he was affected by the environment and family. The old man who adopted him betrothed his daughter to Xiao Wu as his wife. In order to repay the kindness of the old man, Xiao Wu worked diligently every day, farming in the morning and evening, and fishing during the day.

One spring, during the fish season, the old man suddenly fell ill. He wanted to eat fresh fish when he was dying, but the weather was not good. There was strong wind every day and he could not go fishing. The old man's condition became worse and worse. , Xiao Wu had no choice but to risk his life and go to sea. The old man at home was in danger, and the daughter stayed by her mother's side and kept saying: "Mom, mother, don't die yet, Xiao Wu will be back soon." After hearing this, the old man nodded: "Good boy, it's hard for Xiao Wu. That's all, that's all..." The old man died before he finished speaking.

At this moment, Xiao Wu ran back with a big fresh fish, but the old man had passed away. The couple were heartbroken and cried, so they had to cook the fresh fish and serve it to the family. Since then, Mr. and Mrs. Xiao Wu have offered this big fish just caught in early spring in front of the old man’s grave every year, and named this fish as the old man lamented before his death: “That’s all, that’s all.” It was named "Bayu", which is now Bayu. Since then, people have learned from Xiao Wu’s experience that when the elderly can eat, they must let them eat enough, and they must let them eat what they want to eat, especially the Spanish mackerel in spring. Therefore, sending mackerel in spring to honor father-in-law and mother-in-law has become a custom for a long time and has been passed down to this day.
