Qiyang belonged to Changsha County in the Qin Dynasty, the Quanling Marquis Kingdom in the Western Han Dynasty, and Quanling County in the Eastern Han Dynasty. During the Three Kingdoms period, Qiyang County was established in the first year of Wu Baoding (266). It was named because the county seat was located in the south of Qishan Mountain. In Sui Dynasty, it was merged into Lingling County. In the fourth year of Tang Wude's reign (621), the county system was restored.
Original Qiyang County was originally located in Qiyang County. In 1952, Qiyang County was analyzed and Qidong County was established. It was named because it is located to the east of Qiyang County
