This is because Changshui International Airport is located in Changshui Neighborhood Committee (formerly Changshui Village Committee). The word "Changshui" is derived from the names of the two villages "Changpo" and "Hunshuitang" under the jurisdiction of the Changshui Neighborhood Committee.
On August 29, 2011, the Civil Aviation Administration of China announced that according to the application of Yunnan Airport Group Co., Ltd. and in accordance with the "Regulations on the Administration of Place Names" and the "Civil Airport Use Licensing Regulations", the Civil Aviation Administration of China has agreed Kunming's new airport will be named "Kunming Changshui International Airport", and its English name will be "KUNMING CHANGSHUI INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT".
Kunming New Airport is the only large-scale gateway hub airport approved for construction during the country’s “Eleventh Five-Year Plan” period. It is my country’s fourth largest national gateway hub airport facing Southeast Asia and South Asia and connecting Europe and Asia. The terminal was built in one go to meet the standards of 2020 passenger throughput of 38 million, cargo and mail throughput of 950,000 tons, and 303,000 aircraft takeoffs and landings.

Historical evolution of Kunming Changshui International Airport:
In 1998, the preliminary work of the Kunming new airport construction project started. On October 18, 2005, the "Kunming New Airport Site Optimization Plan Report" passed the review of the Civil Aviation Administration of China. On December 5, 2008, the Civil Aviation Administration of China and the People's Government of Yunnan Province jointly approved the master plan of Kunming New Airport, and the construction of Kunming Changshui International Airport officially started.
On June 5, 2010, the main project of the terminal building of Kunming Changshui International Airport was officially capped. On August 29, 2011, the Civil Aviation Administration of China officially approved the naming of Kunming New Airport as Kunming Changshui International Airport. On June 28, 2012, Kunming Airport was relocated from Kunming Wujiaba International Airport to Changshui International Airport.
In April 2015, the Category II blind landing equipment on Runway 22 of the airport was officially put into use. The General Administration of Customs approved China Eastern Airlines to pilot the "through flight" transfer for inbound and outbound passengers via Kunming Changshui International Airport. It is the fourth international airport in China to trial this model.
