Zaozhuang, where the city is based, was formed as a village during the Tang and Song Dynasties. It was named Zaozhuang because of its many jujube trees. The name was officially used after the city was established in 1961.
In the early years of the Ming Dynasty, the court allowed private mining, and immigrants gradually moved to live around the "Yibei Kiln Farm". In each settlement, people are marked by their surnames or names based on geographical features, village records, etc. The more famous villages include: Jinzhuang, Sanhezhuang, Zaozhuang (named after the jujube forest at the head of the village), etc. In the first year of the Republic of China (1912), the "Articles of Association of Zhongxing Company" was officially implemented, which stated: "The company's main mine is located in Zaozhuang, north of Yixian County." At this point, the place name Zaozhuang began to become famous in society.
In October 1949, today's Zaozhuang City was still divided into two counties: Yi and Teng. Yi County belonged to the Taizao Prefecture and Teng County belonged to the Nishan Prefecture. In May 1950, Yi and Teng counties belonged to the Teng County Prefecture. In July 1953, Yi and Teng counties were transferred to the Jining Special Administrative Office. In 1958, the Yixian government office moved to Zaozhuang Town. In 1960, Yixian County was changed to the county-level Zaozhuang City, and in 1961 it was transformed into a municipality directly under the Central Government of Shandong Province. Teng County was placed under Zaozhuang City in 1979.
