Introduction to Hongshan Pass

Hongshankou is located on the Great Wall line about 25 kilometers northeast of Zunhua City, Tangshan City, Hebei Province. It borders Xinglong County in Chengde Prefecture to the north and Qianxi Sahe River to the east. The ancient city of Hongshan Pass is surrounded by mountains and is an important thoroughfare connecting the north and south. According to legend, when the Great Wall was being built during the Warring States Period, a stone city was built here to station troops. In the early Tang Dynasty, a man named Hong occupied the mountain and set up a stronghold here, and named it Hongshan Village. Later, because of the growing power of the Hong family, , and located above the pass, gradually evolved into its current name - Hongshan Pass. In the past, some people also called it "Shamao City" because the Hongshan Pass in the past looked like the character "pin", just like the old officials' black gauze hats, hence the name. In the past, the roadside of Hongshankou Village was lined with pine trees, and the people often called it "Songpeng Road". In the Ming Dynasty, Hongshan Pass was a road city on Songpeng Road, one of the twelve roads of the Jizhen Great Wall, and was guarded by generals.
