What does the word Yin mean?

The word Yin refers to descendants.

Yin, a second-level Chinese character, is pronounced as Yin (yìn). The radical is month and the total number of strokes is 9. Its basic meaning is descendants, such as "Yin Si". Yin is a knowing word, and its original meaning is to inherit from descendants. The character Yin (yìn) can be divided into three parts. The outer part looks like a "son", the upper middle part is a "unit", and the middle lower part is a "month".

"Yin" is a standard ideographic character, and the "moon" in it represents "meat", indicating blood relationship. "庺" means continuity, repetition and overlapping, and the "er" outside means extension and continuation. In "Shuowen Jiezi" it is said that Yin is inherited by his descendants. Therefore, the word "Yin" means children and grandchildren, and the descendants will be passed down by one continuous line and the incense will continue. In the ancient book "Erya", Yin means Jiye. Therefore, this Chinese character was valued by many royal families in ancient times.

Name knowledge

The most obvious example is Zhao Kuangyin of the Song Dynasty, whose nickname was Xiang Haier. It is said that when Zhao Kuangyin was born, his whole body was filled with fragrance, so he was nicknamed "Xiangbaier". From the name Zhao Kuangyin, we can also see the knowledge of the ancients in choosing names. "Kuang" means Kuangzheng, and "Yin" means descendants. Kuangyin means to rectify all future generations. Not only should his descendants be virtuous and become role models, but they should also be filled with descendants and continue forever.

Similar to Zhao Kuangyin is Emperor Kangxi. Emperor Kangxi wanted to name his son both to distinguish him from ordinary people and to be unique. Emperor Kangxi added the character "Yin" to the prince's name in order to imitate Zhao Kuangyin. Zhao Kuangyin passed his throne to his brother Zhao Guangyi instead of his son Zhao Dezhao. Emperor Kangxi also wanted his many sons to consider the friendship between brothers at all times and set an example for future generations.
