Place name is the proper name of a natural or human geographical entity in a specific spatial location. The meaning of naming a place name is usually regarded as the literal meaning of a place name, the focus of people's naming a place name, or the reason or motivation of naming a place name.
Place names are the product of society, and their naming and evolution are always restricted by the level of social development. Without the accumulation of navigation knowledge and the great geographical discovery in 15 ~ 17 century, there would be no such sea names as the Pacific Ocean and the Indian Ocean.
