1. Taking refuge in the Three Jewels is like applying for a student ID card to go to school and finding your own instructor (refugee teacher). Therefore, you must go to the temple to hold a formal ceremony and have the refuge teacher teach you how to take refuge. A disciple who takes refuge in accordance with the Dharma is a qualified lay disciple of Buddhism. It is against the law to pay for a certificate or convert online, or to make a formality at home to convert. The precepts stipulate that if there is a monastic monk within a certain distance of your home, and you do not go for refuge, but you take refuge at home, you do not have the body of refuge, which means that you are not considered to have officially taken refuge in the Three Jewels.
2. Since there is a master to take refuge in, it is natural to ask the master to give him a Dharma name, which means that he has not only completed the admission procedures, but also has his own student number.
3. There are countless benefits gained after taking refuge. To sum up, there are at least eight kinds: (1) Become a disciple of the Buddha. (2) It is the basis for ordination. (3) Reduce karma. (4) Able to accumulate great merit. (5) Do not fall into the lower realms. (6) Humans and non-humans cannot be in chaos. (7) All good things will succeed. (8) Be able to achieve Buddhahood. Moreover, there are 36 good gods sent by the four heavenly kings to guard them day and night. There are also ghosts and gods as numerous as the sands of the Ganges River, who are their dependents and take turns protecting those who have taken the Three Refuges.
——I hope that my brother will take refuge as soon as possible, and I will praise you with joy.
