What element is Ti, as follows:
ti is titanium.
Titanium element symbol ti, atomic number 22, belongs to refractory rare light metal.
it is a silvery white metal with the characteristics of low density, high melting point, high specific strength, strong corrosion resistance, good high and low temperature performance, non-magnetism, non-toxicity and good biocompatibility.
Among them, the high specific strength performance is particularly outstanding. The strength of high-strength titanium alloy is equivalent to that of high-strength steel, but the density is almost half smaller.
titanium and its alloys also have the characteristics of shape memory, superconductivity and hydrogen storage. At present, titanium and its alloys are widely used in chemical industry, marine engineering, aerospace, military, metallurgy, medical treatment, sports and leisure.
the discovery of titanium
1. gregor? [2]? (Reverend William Gregor, 1762-1817): In 1791, titanium was discovered in Cornwall, England, in the form of titanium-bearing minerals. The discoverer was gregor, an English amateur mineralogist, who was then a priest in charge of Creed parish in Cornwall.
He found some black sand beside a stream in nearby Manaccan parish. Later, he found that the sand would be attracted by magnets, and he realized that this mineral (ilmenite) contained a new element. After analysis, it is found that there are two kinds of metal oxides in the sand: iron oxide (the reason why sand is attracted by magnets) and a white metal oxide that he can't identify.
Realizing that this unidentified oxide contains an undiscovered metal, gregor published this discovery to the Royal Geological Society of Cornwall and the German Chemical Yearbook. About the same time, Franz-Joseph Mü ller von Reichenstein made a similar substance, but he couldn't identify it.
2. klaproth? [3]? (Martin Heinrich Klaproth, 1743-1817): In 1795, German chemist klaproth also discovered this oxide when he was analyzing Hungarian red rutile.
He advocated the method of naming uranium (discovered by klaproth in 1789), and named this new element "Titanium" after the name of Titan in Greek mythology. Chinese is named titanium according to its transliteration. When he heard of gregor's earlier discovery, klaproth obtained some samples of Manakan mineral and confirmed that it contained titanium.
3. Hunter? [4]? (Matthew A. Hunter): The titanium discovered by gregor and klaproth at that time was powdered titanium dioxide, not metallic titanium. Because the oxide of titanium is extremely stable, and metallic titanium can directly and violently combine with oxygen, nitrogen, hydrogen, carbon, etc., it is difficult to prepare elemental titanium.
It was not until 191 that American chemist Hunter reduced TiCl4 _ 4 with sodium for the first time to produce metallic titanium with a purity of 99.9%.
