During the Tang Dynasty, Xi'an was called Chang'an. Why was it renamed Xi'an?

During the Tang Dynasty, Xi'an was called Chang'an, which means "long-lasting peace and stability." Chang'an sounds more pleasant and grand than Xi'an. However, due to historical changes, the replacement of dynasties, and the differences between different cultures and levels, Chang'an sounds more beautiful and grand than Xi'an. As a result, the capital moved eastward, and Chang'an no longer applied to general western cities. It may have been downgraded to the standard of similar cities to Xining, and Chang'an gradually evolved into Xi'an.

Chang'an has been used as the capital for a long time in ancient times. It is at the forefront in all aspects. It is also a famous historical city in ancient my country and can definitely be ranked first. During the Han and Tang Dynasties, Chang'an has always been a world-class big city because of the strength of the Han and Tang Dynasties and its capital. The origin of Chang'an is largely determined by the fact that it is the capital city.

It can be traced back to the Western Zhou Dynasty. King Wen of Zhou and King Wu of Zhou built Fengjing and Haojing respectively. This is the earliest name of Xi'an. Although there is a capital, it is not Chang'an. During the Liu Bang period, this place was designated as Chang'an County, and later as the capital it was called Chang'an City, which means "long-lasting peace and stability".

Later on, Chang'an County has always existed, so the name has not changed, but the units above it have changed. The name of the capital is not Chang'an, but there is a county called Chang'an and the city is called Chang'an City. The capital city or the superior unit under its jurisdiction was called Jingzhaoyi in the Han Dynasty, Jingzhao County in the Jin Dynasty, Jingzhao Prefecture in the Tang Dynasty, and Fengyuan Road in the Yuan Dynasty. This is what it should be called more Name, after all, Chang'an is only a county-level unit.

Finally, in the Ming Dynasty, the name Chang'an officially disappeared and became Xi'an. The original name Xi'an also had a moral meaning: Anxi means "maintaining long-term peace and stability in the west".

The name of Chang'an has disappeared, but it will always live in our hearts. Everyone remembers the glory of Chang'an City in the Tang Dynasty and yearns for its glory in the past. Due to historical changes, the capital of the dynasty finally moved eastward and the west was no longer prosperous. As Chang'an, it somewhat overshadowed the aura of the capital. Perhaps this was how Chang'an's name changed and became Xi'an today.
