I will answer seriously. Both Buddhism and Taoism enshrine Guanyin, but their origins have different opinions.
Let’s talk about Buddhism first.
Avalokitevara Bodhisattva in Sanskrit, also known as Avalokite?vara Bodhisattva and Guangshiyin Bodhisattva, is one of the four great Bodhisattvas. He has a dignified and kind appearance, and often holds a willow purifier in his hand. With his infinite wisdom and magical power, he is compassionate and compassionate, and saves the suffering of the world. When people encounter disasters, they just need to chant his name and go to rescue him, so it is called "Avalokitesvara", which means "the voice of the world's misery."
According to the records of the "Sad Flower Sutra": Avalokitesvara was the prince of Wu Jing Nian, the Holy King of Wheels, whose name was "Buju" before the immeasurable calamity. He made a great wish to have great compassion to end the suffering and troubles of all sentient beings, so that they can always live in peace and happiness. For this reason Treasure Tathagata named him Avalokitesvara. "The Avatamsaka Sutra" says: "The brave husband Guanshiyin."
Some Buddhist scriptures, such as the Thousand Hands and Thousand Eyes of the Great Compassionate Heart Dharani Sutra, record that Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva is actually an ancient Buddha from the past. He achieved enlightenment as early as immeasurable kalpas ago and is known as the "True Dharma Ming". Tathagata", also known as "Righteous Dharma Tathagata".
Avalokitesvara was introduced to China around the Three Kingdoms period. Now we see that most of the Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva worshiped are female. But at that time, Guanyin was still a mighty man. In the murals of the Mogao Grottoes in Dunhuang, Gansu Province and the statues from the Northern and Southern Dynasties, Guanyin is shown as a male, with two beautiful mustaches on his lips. Before the Tang Dynasty in my country, the statues of Avalokitesvara were all male, and the Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva in India was also a male. In the Tang Dynasty, due to the admiration and modification of the court, they began to appear in female form, which continues to this day.
There are probably two reasons for this: one is that the female body of Guanyin is his incarnation; the other is that it may also be related to the fact that Guanyin Bodhisattva can "give away children" and is the incarnation of great mercy.
Let’s talk about Taoism
The Guanyin mentioned in Taoism refers to “Zhenren Cihang”. So where did Cihang Zhenren come from? There are two reasons.
The first is that according to the "Tongjian of Immortals of the Past Dynasties" volume: there is a Jurchen in the Chaoyin Cave of Luojiayan in Putuo. It is said that during the time of King Shang, he practiced Taoism here. He had obtained the Samadhi of magical powers and vowed to save men and women in the world. . He tried to use elixirs and nectar to help people, and the people of Nanhai called him Cihang Master.
Secondly, according to Li Shan’s annotation and quote from the Lingbao Sutra, it says: The fallen king of the world of Zen Li has a daughter, whose given name and surname is Yin, and she is still silent when she is alive. When he was four years old, Wang Guizhi abandoned him in the Akong Mountain of Nanfusang. A woman has no food and often loses her breath. She takes semen from the moon and is naturally full. Suddenly, I met with the man of God at Danling's house, under Berlin. The pronunciation of the surname is inscribed on the right hand side of the red stone. The pronunciation of the surname: Although you cannot speak, you can recall this article. He sent the soul boy from Zhu Palace to teach his younger brother the art of yinzhi, and taught him the pronunciation of picking books and putting them into characters. So he can speak. Yu Shan came out and was still in the country. There was a severe drought in the country, fires were lit underground, the people were scorched, and more than half of them died. If you go through the ground to get water, there will be no spring for a hundred feet. Wang Xie was afraid. The woman showed her true nature and screamed for the king, and the sky rained floods up to ten feet high. So he disappeared and disappeared.
So, now back to the focus of the question: Is Guanyin Buddhist or Taoist?
From the above two analyses, we can obviously find clues. That is to say, what Buddhism calls Guanyin is Guanyin, and what Taoism calls "Cihang Zhenren" means that both are true beliefs of their own, but initially they are not related.
Why do you say that? There are also two reasons.
First, before the Tang Dynasty, classics about Guanyin and various legends about him could be found everywhere in Buddhism. However, before the Tang Dynasty, there was no corresponding record about Guanyin in Taoism, only about "Zhenren Cihang". record.
Second, Guanyin has always existed in India. As we all know, Buddhism was introduced from India to China, not from China to India. If Guanyin was created by Taoism, then how did it spread to India?
So, there is only one conclusion: Guanyin was originally Buddhist. But after the Tang Dynasty, especially after the emergence of the Quanzhen sect, which proposed the idea of ??"unity of the three religions", the Taoist Cihang Master was gradually said to be Guanyin.
This is a good thing. Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism are the three main forces of traditional Chinese culture.
The three have argued with, learned from, and complemented each other throughout history, and they have jointly promoted the development of Chinese traditional culture. For example, the origin legend of "Thousand-Armed Avalokitesvara" appears to be Buddhist, but it is actually formed by Buddhism blending the Confucian "filial piety" and the Taoist "immortal" views.
