Located in the westernmost part of Wanshan Islands, Gaolan Islands control the inland waterway leading to Guangzhou.
Sanzao Island is the largest island in Wanshan Islands, close to the mainland, which is of great significance for guarding the Pearl River Estuary and the delta region. Guishan Island, located in the east of the Pearl River Estuary, is the gateway to the sea for Guangzhou, Huangpu and Pearl River ports, and also the main air and sea passage from Hong Kong to Macao, and its position is very important.
