When it comes to the compound surnames in Jin Yong's novels, everyone can easily name a few. Of course, the most famous ones are Linghu Chong, Dongfang Bubai and Dugu Qiubai.
In addition, when I think about it, Ouyang Feng, Murong Fu, and Gongsun Lue also immediately come to mind.
There are also relatively unknown ones, such as Helian Tieshu in "Dragon Babu". Situ Bolei in "The Deer and the Cauldron". etc.
So when people asked Jin Yong why he stopped writing, he said that many stories had been repeated and there was nothing new to write. In fact, many of the plural surnames had been used by him many times, and there were no plural surnames available. . . .
Martial arts novelists all like to use compound surnames, but most of them are inspired by Jin Yong. Speaking of why Jin Yong likes to use compound surnames in his works?
There are actually three core reasons.
First, in ancient my country, most of the compound surnames originated from ethnic minorities. In the process of Chinese acceptance of the Central Plains culture, the surnames were not changed. For example, the descendants of Ouyang Feng and Dayan from the Western Regions Murong Fu.
This is the case for the famous Murong family: "The Chronicles of the Three Kingdoms·Xianbei Biography" mentioned that during the reign of Emperor Huan of the Han Dynasty, Xianbei was divided into three parts: the central, the eastern and the western. The central official, Ke Zuique, lived in Murong Temple. According to the records in "Tongzhi Clan Brief", the Murong family came from the medieval period. The descendants of the tribal leader Gaoxin established the Xianbei Kingdom. They said that they admired the way of Eryi (Heaven and Earth) and followed the Three Lights (sun, moon, and sun). (star) appearance, so he took Murong as his surname and was called the Murong family.
Secondly, the compound surname can bring about a unique four-character name. This kind of cadence of speech changes can establish its own sense of mystery among other characters. For example, Dongfang Bubai and Dugu Qiubei, the two names are far more shocking than Zhang Bubai and Li Qiubei.
The third reason is less well known.
That is, in the classic Chinese martial arts literary works that Jin Yong respected very much, there is actually a preference for using compound surnames.
For example, in the literary work "Water Margin", which can be considered as one of the core traces of Chinese martial arts culture, the three heroes among the 100 single 8 generals have compound surnames:
Hu Yanzhuo, Gongsun Sheng, Huangfuduan, the ratio is very high.
For example, the last hero to appear, Huangfu Duan, is written in "Water Margin":
I saw Zhang Qing recommending a veterinarian in Dongchang Prefecture with a double surname in front of Song Gongming. Huangfu is famous. "This man is good at looking at horses. He knows how to detect cold and heat symptoms in the head and mouth, and can cure them all with medicine and acupuncture. He is really talented in Bole. He was originally from Youzhou. He has blue eyes and yellow beard, and looks like a foreigner, so he is called this person. He is a purple-bearded uncle. Liangshan Po is also useful. You can ask this person to lead his wife and children up the mountain together."
This does not include another famous person: Ximen Qing.
For another example, in another classic ancient martial arts literature, "Three Heroes and Five Righteousnesses", two core characters also have compound surnames:
Northern Xia Ouyang Chun and Gongsun Ce.
Gongsun Ce, Bao Gong’s counselor, also appeared from the Daxiangguo Temple and said to himself: "I was born late in life and my surname was Gongsun Mingce. He was trapped in the house for a long time and fell into the Sun Mountain many times, so he lived in the Daxiangguo Temple. I have inherited more. However, the Zen Master gave me special treatment and sent me a special letter, hoping that my husband would recommend it for inclusion."
There is also a classic chivalrous literature "The Legend of Heroes of Sons and Daughters" written in the 23rd chapter: "It turns out that this Feng Shui surname is repeated. Duanmu, whose name is Huan and whose courtesy name is Zhongdian, has been passed down from generation to generation, specializing in "Zhouyi" and Heluo geography.
It is precisely because of the third reason that Jin Yong continued to pass it down. 8) Gongsun (12) compound surname (1)
