Since ancient times, the north of the Yangtze River has been called a river. Why is the south of the Yangtze River mostly called a river?

Northern water systems are often called "he" because the word "he" initially refers to the Yellow River. Later, the ancients gradually followed the Yellow River and named other northern waters rivers. The southern water system is also called the Yangtze River by the southern ethnic groups. So people popularized this term and gave other southern river basins the name "jiang".

Our country has rich water systems and numerous rivers, but we usually find a phenomenon that the water systems in northern my country are often named "rivers", such as the Yellow River, Haihe River, etc. However, southern water systems are often named "river", such as the Yangtze River, Pearl River, etc. From the perspective of these rivers, the reason for their naming has nothing to do with the size of the water system, so why do they have such different names?

In fact, this matter starts from the ancient history of our country. Our country has a long history in ancient times. In this five-thousand-year-long civilization, there are too many civilizations that have been brilliant. Taking the Zhou Dynasty as an example, civilization can be divided into the Yangtze River Civilization and the Yellow River Civilization.

Due to their poor ability to adapt to nature, ancient people generally chose to live by water. At that time, the word "river" was still a proper noun, generally referring to the Yellow River. In addition, this word also appears in gods such as He Bo. The ancients at that time used the word "水" to describe water systems, such as Weishui River, Huai River, etc.

However, despite the progress of culture and social development, the ancients gradually changed the name of the river. People in many places changed the name of the water system to "river" according to the name of the Yellow River. This is the origin of the name Northern Rivers.

In contrast, the south was developed relatively late. The word "jiang" is also a proper noun for the Yangtze River. After research, many scholars believe that the reason why Jiang became a noun for the southern water system is mainly because it was a customary name of the local ethnic groups in ancient times. Because the Chu people of that era often came into contact with the local people, this name gradually became popular.

Of course, although my country's water systems are divided into north and south, they are all places that gave birth to and witnessed my country's five thousand years of civilization. Regional differences cannot be caused by different names.
