Chinese folklore says that the God of Joy was originally a devout woman who worshiped the Big Dipper God. When she became an immortal, Big Dipper asked her what she wanted. She pursed her lips with her hands and smiled without answering. Lord Big Dipper mistook her for asking for a beard, so he gave her a long beard. Because she looked happy when she smiled, she was named the God of Joy. Because of her long beard, she was no longer allowed to be seen by mortals. In her image, the God of Joy specializes in celebrations, but does not show her true form.

There are two theories about the origin of the God of Blessings: One theory originates from the Heavenly Official among the three officials enshrined in Taiping Dao, and evolved into the theory that the Heavenly Official bestows blessings. It is said that the God of Fortune is Yangcheng, the governor of Tang Daozhou. He was revered as the God of Fortune because of his good governance in resisting the tribute of dwarfs.
