On July 1, 1965, the first phase of China's earliest Beijing subway project started construction. It was officially opened for operation on January 15, 1971.
In p>1965, the Central Secretariat of China and the State Council decided to build the Beijing Subway. On February 4th, Mao Zedong personally reviewed the Beijing subway construction plan, and determined the eight-character policy of "careful design and careful construction" in his instructions. On July 1st, the first phase of Beijing Metro started. Many national leaders, including Zhu De and Deng Xiaoping, and Beijing Mayor Peng Zhen attended the groundbreaking ceremony.
On January 15th, 1971, the first phase of Beijing Metro started trial operation, with the line from Beijing Station to Gongzhufen Station. The west terminal of the operation line was extended to Yuquan Road Station on August 5, 1971 and to Gucheng Station on November 7.
