Dunhuang is a cultural treasure house. Whether it is Dunhuang murals, sculptures or red scrolls, its content involves politics, economy, military, philosophy, religion, literature, medicine, ethnicity, folklore, language, history, Science and technology and other broad fields, among which content related to martial arts did not attract the attention of the martial arts community until the early 1990s.
In 1990, when Lanzhou was hosting the City Games, Xu Cai, chairman of the Chinese Martial Arts Association, believed that Lanzhou and Dunhuang were very close and had the same culture, so they should write an article on the combination of Dunhuang murals and Lanzhou traditional martial arts, and founded Dunhuang Martial Arts. , to promote traditional martial arts, which gave Wang Degong, then chairman of the Gansu Wushu Association, great confidence in innovating Dunhuang martial arts. After nearly two years of paper talks and speculation, in April 1992, Wang Degong led his Wang Sujun and Northwest Normal University Physical education teacher Chen Qing, disciple Li Tianhua and others conducted an on-site inspection of Dunhuang Mogao Grottoes. The extensive and profound cultural connotations and colorful martial arts scenes of Mogao Grottoes deeply shocked the inspection team. The most impressive thing is the martial arts images in Dunhuang murals and sculptures, which are the reappearance of the evolution and inheritance of Chinese martial arts! The martial arts shapes in murals and sculptures include unarmed fighting, also known as "boxing bravery", which is the origin and basic form of Chinese martial arts. There are many contents reflecting unarmed fighting in Dunhuang murals, the most typical one is the "Fighting Picture" in Cave 428. The second is martial arts, which has a lot of content in Dunhuang murals, such as the "Dance of the Warriors" in Cave 285 and the "Squatting and Shooting Picture" in Cave 53. The third is swordsmanship. There are many scenes in which swords are used as weapons. The most vivid depiction of swordsmanship is the Buddha biography screen painting on the west wall of Cave 61. The movements in the painting are vigorous and powerful, and the hands, eyes, body and sword are integrated into one. During the entire inspection period, the most gratifying thing was that whether it was difficult moves such as splits, holding tripods, leg sweeps, side rolls, and Oolong gallows preserved in the Dunhuang folk society, or various leaps performed by warriors during lion charades, Martial arts elements such as falling and fighting fully prove that Dunhuang martial arts originated from and spread among the people. The most encouraging thing is the martial arts shown in Dunhuang murals and sculptures. Many movements are quite similar to the local martial arts in Lanzhou. For example, in the palm shape, the willow leaf palm is generally used in domestic boxing, that is, the five fingers are close together, but in the martial arts of Dunhuang murals, it is basically the 'eight-character palm', and the Lanzhou boxing method uses the 'eight-character palm'. That is, the thumb is extended. In addition, movements such as slightly tilting the toes and protruding hips are all the same as Lanzhou Boxing...
After the inspection, there was arduous copying, conception, creation, modification, and perfection. How to combine the beautiful shapes of Dunhuang murals with the martial arts significance of traditional martial arts and create unique Dunhuang martial arts has become Wang Degong's unremitting pursuit. He uses Dunhuang shapes as his martial arts frame, competitive martial arts as his appearance, Lanzhou local boxing spirit and charm as his foundation, Tongbei Quan strength as his style, and absorbs the continuous and soothing characteristics of Tai Chi. Through repeated deliberation and practice, we cleverly integrated the movements in the murals such as the Mojie Offering Book, the Asura Legs, the Four Heavenly Gods Tuoma, the Flying Scattering Flowers, the Laodu Fork Dou, and the Rebounding Pipa. The characteristics of the performance are simple and unsophisticated movements. The fist is fierce and powerful; the shape is graceful and elegant; the hardness is combined with softness, and the softness is combined with strength. It not only shows the powerful masculinity of the ancient Dunhuang boxing in the Western Regions, but also contains the feminine beauty of the dancing goddess. In August 1992, the first set of "Dunhuang Boxing" mother boxing was finally officially launched. At the opening ceremony of the "First China Lanzhou Silk Road Art Festival", a team of 160 people performed for the first time to Chinese and foreign guests. The Dunhuang Quanmu Quan Er Road, which goes down the mural, became the biggest highlight of the first Silk Road Festival and won unanimous praise from martial arts enthusiasts and Chinese and foreign guests. Later, in the author's opinion, Wang Degong further integrated the boxing techniques of competitive boxing, Lanzhou arm boxing, hanging boxing, fanzi, Baji, kick kick, etc., making it "resembling Dunhuang murals and magical traditional boxing skills", and successively created and compiled Dunhuang basic boxing, Dunhuang fitness boxing and other routines were developed. The entire Dunhuang Boxing includes the second way of Dunhuang Boxing, the third way of Dunhuang Basic Boxing, the third way of Dunhuang Fitness Boxing, and Dunhuang swordsmanship, swordsmanship, spearmanship, stick skills, shoveling branches, etc. Dunhuang Boxing is the mother boxing and foundation in its series of routines. After more than 20 years of learning, fusion and sharing of boxing principles, the current boxing style of Lanzhou has been formed, which is based on the local boxing skills of Lanzhou, supported by the Pigua style, characterized by long and short sticks, represented by Dunhuang martial arts, and centered on various moves. The Dunhuang martial arts system is complete, unique, and magnificent.
The martial arts that have stood on the Dunhuang murals for thousands of years have finally stepped down from the murals to benefit the world!
